1680 vs 1920

Hey guys, I am looking into getting a new monitor here (on my old trusty 2005fpw from 2004)

Well I used to have a 30" dell but sold it because of the insane hardware requirements to keep my games running well. So I know how much resolution can effect games, but how much exactly?

I want to get a new monitor but dont want to get something that causes a completely huge drop in FPS. So getting to the point, whats the difference in performance from my current resolution (1680 x 1050) to 1920 x 1200? Will there be a large/small effect on my games' frame rates? I ask because of recent hardware upgrades since I had my 30"

AMD 6400+ x2 dual core 3.2 ghz
4gb ram
GTX 280 1gb

What video card do you have? That's the key to optimizing your gaming res.
The main difference you see from 1680x1050 to 1920x1200 is the 19x12 res rewards the 1gb cards much more than the 512mb cards. When people speak of gpu bottlenecks you start to see it at 1680 but you see it a lot more pronounced at 1920.
No less than a 1gb 4870 or GTX260 is recommended for optimal 1920x1200 gaming
 
going from 1680x1050 (1.76 megapixels) to 1920x1200 (2.3 megapixels) means a 30% increase in resolution, so that's how much more of a load your graphics card will deal with. though, with your gtx 280, that should pretty much be a non-issue. go for the monitor upgrade and be satisfied, my friend.

Yeah I was thinking so too, but even in the case of games like Crysis where I have literally no extra frames per second to spare (like 30) will it really lower it that much? I know you say 30% but I mean I dont know

1920x1200 is a long way from 2560x1600 (which is 77% more than the 1920x1200)
 
and an X2 at 3.2GHz isn't gonna help a lot at 1920x1200. I know a lot of people say how important the videocard is at higher resolutions but there is a noticeable difference between an X2 and a Core 2
 
well, you didn't specify which games you play

How about buying the new monitor from someplace locally so you could return it easily if the videocard/resolution combination doesn't perform as you like...
 
well the GTX280 is plenty strong for 2560, so maybe you'd have to lower some settings every now and then but the experience would still be very good.

otherwise i ordered an FP241VW just tonight -- a very well regarded 24" MVA from benq. priced to move, too, at $450 right now after discounts. funny thing is i paid about that much 4 years ago for my 2004FPW.
 
Your system is fine actually for a 22" LCD with 1680 x 1050 res. 1.76MP on a 22" is a big gap between the 30" you had with 4MP resolution. A 22" or 1680 x 0150 res is perfect considering the size and you have more options as far as graphics card selections to run the games at this resolution. If you don't mind glossy screens look at the LG 227WTQ-PF 22" LCD. This LCD is very good for gaming with vibrant colors. It looks compact to. It's on sale at Best Buy for $260 right now.
 
Yeah I was really leaning towards that, but honestly, I watch a lot of HD movies and want something that actually views 1080p in its real resolution. So I naturally went for the 24" but was worried that it would be too much for my smooth framerates
 
A GTX280 will be fine running most games at 1920 x 1200 res. You may not have the utmost highest framerates but, if it's over 30fps it should be smooth and not jerky. If you want more FPS then..some games require to run off AA(Anti Aliasing) as this would hinder performance. But, your GTX 280 should allow you to turn up AA in most games. If you are concerned on Crysis game, turn off AA or, at the most, try 2X AA and see how it goes.
 
30FPS is jerky. Once I get less than 40, I can't play - because I'm used to smoothness - mainly because I play a lot of online FPS's and you need 60 fps if you're half serious about being good online.

I was thinking of going for a E2400HD, and reducing the width if I needed more frames, and have black bars down the side, but from what I read, it struggles with coping with various resolutions.
 
I would'nt think you would have a problem with 1900x1200. I just upgraded from a 8800 ultra which I used on my westy for awhile without issue to a 280 which made things I thought were smooth, into glass.

After the years i did 1680 vs 1900 its a no brainer at just doing 1900x1200 now.
 
Hate to say it, but my 8800 GT sometimes experience some slow downs in some moderate graphics games with my 1920 screen. Really tempted to pick up a 4780 but I think i can survive until the next generation.
 
I am running with a 8800gtx and doing games at 1920x1200.

So far test, Far Cry 2, Red Alert 3, Team Fortress 2, and World of Warcraft. Playing them at max setting too, except no AA since I can't really see a need for it yet. Run fine as I see.
 
I would highly recommend going with 1920x1200 considering the fact that you have a pretty high-end system.
 
7900gs and lg 24 inch screen. It plays RTS and RPG's great. I bet I could play CS 1.6 too :p
 
Don't mean to hijack the thread but didn't feel like making a new thread for a very similar question. I have a GTX 260 Core 216 and was wondering if it would be sufficient enough to run most games at 1920x1080 with a decent ~50 FPS? The rest of my system is:

Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 (Stock)
4 GB Crucial Ballistix DDR2 800
EVGA GTX 260 Core 216 (Stock)
Windows Vista Ultimate x64

I want to pick myself up a BenQ E2200HD 1920x1080 to play my PC games and my 360 on. I currently have the Samsung 2053BW and while I know the NXE patch is coming out that supports 16:10; it will shrink the size of the image smaller than 20" and I would rather have a bigger picture than that. :D
 
Well it depends if you are like me or not and cant have any game run on anything but the highest settings (except AA)
 
Well the Dell UltraSharp 2408WFP of course!

I have used Dell monitors for 5 years now and fucking love them, and have yet to have a problem.

And with my experience, most other LCD's my friends buy have one problem or another. But for the most part, its been getting the best reviews anyways
 
What???? Aww man... that 24" has high input lag. Not ideal especially if you play high fps gaming. It's ok if you do 2D applications like watching movies or viewing photos. Shucks, I should have recommended the BenQ FP241VW 24" A well rounded 24" lcd at $500 on BenQ website. $450 with promo code. Oh wells... if you don't have any issues with it then, enjoy your monitor! Hehe
 
Well I havent bought it yet and surely wont if it has a high input lag. Are you sure about this lag? I have only been reading good reviews so far, any links? I want to get the best for my money and thats usually Dell (I honestly dont like benq, at all)
 
Yes, input lag is horrendous! One of the worst, if not the worst in input lag. The earlier model the Dell 2407WFP and 2407WFP HC have lower input lag than the newer Dell 2408WFP line. Even their 30" 3008WFP has high input lag compared to their previous model the 3007WFP and 3007WFP+HC

if you're half serious about being good online then you will probably play with every ingame option on the minimum setting (why do you need bloom and uber leet textures to shoot someone in the face?) so that will probably negate the fps issue

Well I always prefer to play my games on max graphical settings with 16x AF. AA is not needed for me at that resolution and screen size since it would be hard to see. You think my GTX 260 Core 216 could pull off 1920x1080 @ Max Settings w/ 16x AF for most new games?

I would definitely say so (my only real worry is Crysis) I mean I currently run TF2 with 16x AA and its butter smooth so you should be good for the most part. I was just asking if it was going to be super noticeable.

Oh and while I have this thread, what would be the best choice 24" monitor for gaming?
 
Depends, some people can't stand a TN(twisted nematic) monitor due to it's lower horizotal/vertical view angles. Also, it's not a true 8 bit panel tha displays the full 16.7 million colors. TN panels are only 6 bit panels that use dithering to trick they eye into seeing more than 262K colors. Some have Hi-FRC to simulate even more colors to 16.7 million colors, but it is still a 6-bit monitor. But, TN panel lcds, do have advantages though, very low input lag if any and also very low response times. This would be ideal if you are a hardcore gamer playing high FPS games. Also, you do not experience ghosting or motion blur on a TN panel monitor than say some of the MVA, PVA type panels. Here are a few 24" TN panels that are pretty good:
