Hey peeps. I'll be buying a new monitor in late March mainly for gaming. I do watch anime and stuff, but the main purpose is gaming.

I'm looking to get a monitor with a native res no bigger than 1600x1200 so I don't kill my vid card when next gen games come out. I also prefer a matte finish on my screen because glossy reflects too much light (which is why I'm avoiding the NEC 20WMGX2).

Besides the HP LP2065, what other S-IPS monitors are there that fit my requirements?

Are there any new screens coming out soon worth waiting for?

Thanks!

You have some other choices like NEC 2070NX and 2090UX, Dell 2001FP (but I think there are also S-PVa versions of this Dell so you have to be careful).

But you can't go wrong with this HP LP2065, it's the best buy I think.

BTW, Nec 20WGX2 is 1680*1050 (widescreen) so I'm not sure are you looking for a 4:3 screen or a widescreen?

The thing is I read the HP LP2065 is also coming in S-PVA, so it's not a 100% sure thing. I live in PR, so returning monitors just because I got the wrong panel is a no no, since the shipping cost is very high.

Yeah I know the Nec 20WGX2 is 1680x1050. I do prefer 1600x1200 but if I have to, I would go 1680x1050. I do greatly prefer 16x12 though. The Nec 20WGX2 is suppose to be the best for gaming, too bad it's glossy and it's 1680x1050.

I'll look into the NEC 2070NX and 2090UX.Thanks.

Edit: The NEC 2070NX has a contrast ratio of 400:1 which is too low for me and the 2090UXi is just too expensive, priced over $1,000. Thanks anyway.

I haven't seen a single report of anyone getting PVA with HP LP2065. Someone reported here that they read it on DPreview. When I followed up there, it turned out the person that had PVA didn't have HP monitor at all, but a samsung. That was a complete mixup.

Where is PR?

Do a little searching in the forum and you'll see some people talking about the HP 2065 starting to be a lottery. Although it seems that right now it has only be reported in Europe.

PR = Puerto Rico :p

Theres also the Philips 200p7eb, which is my final choice for what appears to be an excellent monitor outside USA.

Why? Well, the usa model is the p7eb/27, it's a pmva panel. In Australia they sell the /75 which is a s-ips panel.

For ONCE Australia gets something first or better then the rest of the world - rather than the dregs we always get in this god-forsaken country!

That's cool but PR is in America... so I guess I would be getting a P-MVA.

P-MVA is not a bad thing by any means...and actually has an advantage over S-IPS for movie watching. (less twinkling)
Yeah so I've read. But like I said the main purpose will be gaming. Though even for gaming my second choice would be a P-MVA monitor (Viewsonic VP2030b).

Contrast ratio on the 2070NX is actually 700:1. The 400:1 spec is incorrect.

NEC 2070NX is very nice display and if you can afford it then go for it. You really shouldn't worry about its contrast. HP LP 2065 is also nice, but there are rumors of S-PVA model. If you can get S-IPS HP then yes, it's one of the best 20" 4:3 models, but so is NEC 2070NX. If you find HP LP 2065 in shop you can see if it's S-IPS in OSD menu - you could try this at your local store:

[cut]
1. Turn off the monitor
2. Press and hold the leftmost “menu” button and push the power button
3. Release the power button.
4. Release the menu button and then press it again
5. The OSD menu will come up and the 5th item from the top will be
previously hidden "Service..."
6. Select "Service..." to see the panel info.
[/cut]

Thanks for the info. I doubt I'll find the HP LP2065 in any local store around here, but hopefully the panels in America are still S-IPS.

Any news about new 20"~22" monitors coming out in March or April worth waiting for?

The guy from PR said he read somewhere that HP is doing panel lottery. So it doesn't mean anything. Also if you follow this thread you could be getting S-PVA, P-MVA or S-IPS panels, so I guess HP has better lottery than Dell :D.
According to this thread, all guys who ordered HP LP2065 reported S-IPS panel, so as Snowdog has pointed out, there is no proof of the lottery in North America....

http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1004&message=21635813

Also if you want to believe websites check it out this, philips is doing the lottery too...with their 200P7ES model:

Anyways, I've ordered HP LP2065 from a local store yesterday, should be getting it sometime this week.... I'll report as soon as I get it...

Isn't the Dell 2007FP an S-IPS panel? Or does it depend when you bought it?

how much did u pay for urs? return policy? lowest I'm finding it for is still about $350 after rebate.

Very good price comparing to the price I have to pay in Canada (about $480 CDN after rebate)...maybe the extra money I'm paying will guarantee me a S-ISP panel.... :D If it wasn't for shipping costs/duty/exchange hassle I would most likely order it from US.

Since I've already won Dell lottery with 2007WFP (very nice display, no dead pixels, cheaper, however the widescreen format was the 'no go' for me) I have a good feeling about HP.... :p

Finally the wait is over ;-)
I live in Ottawa, Canada and I bought it from a local
computer store shopRBC.com (totally recommended) for
$530CDN (before $40US mail-in rebate)

- on the back of the monitor it says:
December 2006 - Rev GSM002

- the OSD reports:
Firmware Rev.114
Panel LM201U05-SLA1

I did some quick tests and so far I like it a lot:
- no dead pixels
- no backlight leaks
- haven't notice any banding issues

I don't think that particular model has ever been confirmed to have an S-IPS panel..

It was S-IPS at the very beginning of the run. When I ordered mine no one new about the lotto and everyone had S-IPS 2007fp. But I got a PVA by the time I ordered (Still A00) and they have been pretty much 100% PVA since.

Want S-IPS get the HP 2065.

I have an A03 Dell 2007FP and I was under the impression it was an S-IPS panel because it has the purble/black color when viewed from the side.

There have been some, but they are the minority by far. What is your panel code?

Thanks for reporting back.

So is that S-IPS?

Have you played any games on it? Primarily FPSs?

Also, how are the black levels?

Please let me know, thanks!

In the service menu it shows LM201U05

Are you sure you have an A03? because they all report the panel info in code. I suppose it is possible you have an A03 sticker but didn't get the flash update to A03.

You know what, I just checked my sticker and it says A02. For some rason I remember checking it after I got it and this whole time I was thinking I had an A03. Sorry about the misinformation.

Yep. you got lucky, that vast majority of the 2007fp are PVA. I had one, it sucked.

There is a dell lotto on both 2007fp, 2007wfp.

2007fp mostly PVA some IPS.
2007wfp mostly IPS some PVA.

1600x1200 LG Flatron L2000C, 20" any good? It says that it is S-IPS

LaCie 320 LCD Monitor

PR = Puerto Rico :p

I am in Europe...- HP LP2065 20" LCD, Carbon Silber, 2x DVI = MVA :(

What does the menu say the name of the panel is? Instructions far above.

Sorry I did not buy it yet. That is the text from the dealer's website. I clearly remember that it said S-IPS few days ago.

The other interesting thing is that the the 30"HP HP LP3065 is being listed as Panel Technology-->TN, anti-glare

Either the website is wrong or HP is changing the panels. I think the website is wrong.

Anyway you can see yourself http://www.digitec.ch/ Go to > Peripherals > displays> then select HP and then display. It's in German...kind of as you can change language to English

Obviously you can't trust that web page. The 30" doesn't have TN. No way.

I have still yet to see a 2065 with anything with other than S-IPS. The first time I found out it was IPS was a picture from someone in Europe who took it apart.

I am not saying they don't have some NON S-IPS somewhere. Just that I haven't seen one yet.

LaCie 320 LCD Monitor

be careful with LG, in North America I believe they are selling L2000CN model with TN film, I went through LG's pain....search this forum and you will see.

- Yes it is S-IPS panel :D
- Hmmm...as for video games, my video card (nvidia 5700LE) needs an upgrade, so I can't play any brand new games. I played Fry Cry at 800x600 and it looked very good
- black levels are good, if you want best black levels I believe MVA panels are your friend.

Yeah, I know VA panels have better black levels, but I do want an S-IPS. Just wanted to see how good were the blacks on that particular monitor.

Have you watch any movies with that monitor (not that it's that important to me)? If so, how well do they look?

Thanks! :)

I find it odd that nobody mentioned the samsung 204b, is there a reason for this?
