just wondering, how many people are using his drive with out raid? and its working fine?
and has anyone found the TLER tool?

i have been using this drive for the last 3 months. seems to be very good. i only get errors on boot up, and it is most likely because i need to flash the bios.
 
only one user???
dont we have anyone else?
or do more people use the X as their single drive?
 
The 1500ADFD drive has a feature that does not let it correct sectors for a longer time period than 8 seconds, that is TLER. because if a drive is not able to recover the sector, then the RAID is supposed to take over, but since a single drive is not in a RAID, then the TLER feature actually hurts you. but i am not sure about this, that is why i am asking....

The raptor X drive 1500AHFD, does not have TLER
 
I have been using a single Raptor WD740ADFD 74GB on my DFI board with zero problems. No errors, hiccups, etc. Game level load times are excellent as to be expected.

Well, one could conceive that the TLER "feature" only shows its effects after a long time of use. Depending on the information density on your HDD, it is possible that you'd go for a long while without noticing any problems.

Also, I would think that newer (just bought) HDDs have less errors, so that the TLER problems would only show after the drive has been in operations for a while.
 
i wonder if there is a way to detect TLER, but thats also kinda why i started this thread.
if you know, please share.

p.s. you are right, from the SR review, the ADFD should have it off, but the ADFD specs say that it has it has it, so.....?

he was asking about the 150gb raptor, not the 74gb raptor ;)

The WD1500ADFD and the WD740ADFD are based off of the same technology, no?? My experience with the 74GB drive and TLER should carry over to the 150GB version.

EDIT: Found this on WD website knowledge base section-

"If you install a RAID edition hard drive in a desktop computer, the computer system may report more errors than a normal desktop hard drive (due to the TLER feature). Western Digital does not recommend installing RAID edition hard drives into a desktop computer environment."

Ok, so does that mean shits gonna start to hit the fan with my OS and files???
 
Ok. Little more info for the new Raptors. The drive spec page for the WD740ADFD doesn't list TLER, possibly becuase it is not set to 'on' be default? This is also the case for the WD360ADFD.

from the sound of it ADFD does have the TLER feature, but its safe to say that we should not worry about it for now... (unless the review sites got misleading info from WD)
 
For anyone that is using the TLER ADFD based Raptor drives, straight from WD tech support:

Thank you for contacting Western Digital Customer Service and Support.

The WD740ADFD does have a 16MB cache and does have TLER. TLER does come turned on. Please note we do not recommend using a RAID edition drives in a non-RAID environment. Please see the link below.

i forget who exactly said this on the forums, but he said the TLER feature was disabled unless it was turned on by the sata raid controller.

edit: lol, i read everything up top, that's where i read it.

This does not appear to be the case for the ADFD drives as per WD tech support.

ok, according to the gentleman i just talked to, the 150gb raptors are fine running as a single drive. he also said the TLER cannot be disabled.

Good deal. I am assuming that your newfound information would also pertain to my WD740ADFD drive too.

As was mentioned before on this forum (I believe by drizzt81), TLER might not pose as a problem now, but may begin to cause issues down the road due to the nature of how TLER operates. I don't know if I feel like dealing with that 'thought' in the back of my mind and the possible file corruption problems later on...

NonVolatile reprogramming tool have no problem disabling TLER for you :D

While I am flattered that you remembered my post, I must add that I was speculating (reasoning?) about the effects that TLER could have. I am no HDD engineer, nor do I work at WD. If WD says that it's fine, I'd somewhat believe them, however they are interested in selling their products. In the end, it's a judgement call: Do you believe what they told someone over the phone or what they wrote in an e-mail? Note should it ever come to a lawsuit over this issue, the latter can 'easily' be used as evidence, an alleged phonecall less so.

Anyway, I do not want to spread FUD: I am going to run a WD5000YS (has TLER) as a single drive for a while and if Dell ever ships my Raptor, I will be running that as a single drive too. That should show what my oppinion is: it doesn't matter.

Please keep us posted on your system's performance with the TLER drives and if you notice any problems.
 
oh, the gentleman also verified the 74gb raptor's TLER IS turned off natively
 
hmm,i also wonder if the Dell offer is the same, but the price range is much different..
oh and anyone find out anything new?
