this is for a buddy of mine who already has:

2gigs ddr2 800 buffalo firestix
8800gts 320
xlcio 500 goodpower
microfly (new revision)

this build is pretty much a gaming/everyday use sff with some folding thrown in and yes this will be overclocked. his budget is pretty tight so at max i wouldn't go higher than $175. this build is not going to be done until the end of the month after the price cuts. my initial suggestion was to go with an am2 setup, possibly a 3600 brisbane and good oc'ing mobo.

wait until the new abit am2 mobo, i dont remeber wat its called, but ya wait and then get that and the 3600 and u will get it to or past 3ghz easy

Core2Duo's are due to drop here in the next week or two.

Also, fry's runs specials on 4300's and board for like 150, granted the board sucks but it's something.

I think AM2 will be your best bet though for that price, not sure, just showing other options.

dont buy the frys deal, its an agp board

well my friend is planning on using his 8800gts so that fry's ecs mobo is a no go.

Intel price drops happen April 22nd. E4300 price is to be $113 from what I have heard.

but with a e4300 that leaves him with nothing for a decent mobo.

i've been reading up on these 3600+ brisbanes and overclocked they perform extremely well. in benchmarking they obviously get dominated by comparable c2d's, but in games and the like the difference is a matter of a few fps's. also these am2 boards should be able to accept the barcelona chips when they come out.

Of course if money is everything then go AMD. He wont have as good of an upgrade path but maybe in a year or so he'll have the money to buy a whole new rig. Thats whats nice about Intel and Conroes. Put in a E4xxx/E6xxx now and then add a qudcore later on. Cant do that with AMD chips. From what I have heard if you want AMD's quads you'll need a whole new mobo for it when it comes time to upgrade. With Intel just swap out chips.

actually the upcoming amd barcelona chips will be compatible with the current am2 mobos. some power saving features and HTT 3 will probably be disabled, but the lost won't be that great.

I've been eyeing up the Sapphire 690 board waiting to see some additional reviews on it for a cheap 3600 x2 mce build.

I have a similar setup and find it works well. This board is currently limited to a 264 overclock with shipping BIOS, see other thread I just updated.

MicroFly from Frys was $29 AR no PSU, I used a Seasonic 330W I already had.
Biostar TA690G $85 at ZZF
3600 Brisbane $65 at the Egg
Supertalent 2G 667 $100 at Ewiz

It can't get much cheaper than this and you even get a free video game with the Brisbane!! To bad I am not a gamer, friends are though and they are happy now.

Sorry, I forgot, I used a stock AMD socket 939 heatsink, the Brisbane is easy to cool.

has he bought the parts yet?

if not get these, Biostar TA690G $85 at ZZF, 3600 Brisbane $65 at the Egg
