I know that Klipsch makes some kick-ass speakers (cause I have PM 5.1's :D ) but they are a lot too expensive for the person I'm helping out.

Which company, Creative or Logitech offers a better set of speakers in the US$200 range?

Or for general movie/music listening, not gaming, would a nice set of 2.1 (lets say the Klipsch 2.1's) be better than an entire 5.1 system?

Anyways, if anyone has some recommendations I'd love to hear them.
 
Best 2.1 setup is the Altec MX5021's. Great for music and solid in movies. The sub is small and not overly loud like the Ultra or 560/680Z subs, but it has a nice punch. Sats really shine.
 
I'd say find a cheap PM2.1 on like ebay or something, and slap some JBL N24II's on it for an extra $80. Like if you can find a PM2.1 going for $100 and the JBL's are about $80 at Worst Buy, you have your self one major owning system that stomps all over the Altec.
 
You can get good speakers or outstanding headphones for $150-200. Depending of course on what they will be used for, I'd opt for good cans instead of speakers.

Check out Grado SR225's, Sennheiser HD580's or 600's. You can have really good sound for $200. Might need a few extra dollars for an amp however...

I have the PM 4.1 and the hd580 (with an amp by Mister X of course)
 
In answer to the original gist of the post, good two channel audio is much preferred to crappy 5.1 audio. For casual music and DVD use, the Klipsch 2.1 speakers are an excellent choice.
