I have the $15 data plan with verizon and I am thinking about getting a new phone. I know I would have to buy the phone out right ($500+) to keep the $15 data plan. What I am wondering is if the plan is 3g only or if it's 4g as well since it is just a capped plan at 150mb?

Yeah it it's 3g only you have to add I think 10 more a month to it to get 4g also you might not have to buy the phone outright to keep the 15 I don't believe I have to to keep my unlimited

There isn't a $15 plan, it's 75mb for $10 for basic phones and 2gb for $30 for smartphones.

Yes there is, its 150mb for $15, its discontinued which is why I said if I want a new phone I have to buy it out right because I won't be able to keep the plan if I sign a contract.

A data plan is a minimum of $30 for verizon around here, and it's required if you get any smart phone. At least it was a few months ago.

This would be a better question for an actual Verizon rep. I know of the $15 plan you're talking about that was only offered for a few months at the beginning of the year, but in order to get 4G, Verizon has to activate the SIM card on the phone to enable the LTE/4G radio and I'll bet that they won't let you activate it on the $15 plan just to force you into the $30 plan. I'm sure it's technically compatible, but Verizon prolly wouldn't like it. Maybe if you get a nice store rep to activate it on your existing plan, but who knows.

It seems kind of contradictory to have a 4G device pulling 10+ Mb/s on a 150 MB plan though. Unless you're super attentive of your data usage, you could literally kill your allowance in a matter of seconds, lol.

I don't use much data at all but when i do it would be nice for it to be faster, 3g is slow. I call verizon and see if they know.

Too bad you're not in Maryland, DC or Virgina or you could just get on this new $20/300MB plan with a 4G phone. Maybe you could call Verizon and see if they'll extend this promotional offer to you? It would be worth a shot because I got in on a promotional $120/month family plan that had unlimited everything w/ 1400 mins last year and it was supposedly only being offered in specific areas outside of NY (were I lived at the time). I was paying ~$150/month for 700 mins and unlimited everything before that.

When the thunderbolt was just coming out they had it in the advertisements that 4g would cost an additional fee ontop of the existing data plan... if i remember right it was 10 more a month
i donno 20 for 300 when 10 more gets you 2 gb

Unlike Sprint, there's no additional $10 fee for 4G (or whatever they want to call that premium for). Those had to have been rumors you were reading at the time.

Also, OP said he doesn't use data that much, so it wouldn't be worth the extra money to go with the $30/2GB plan. 300 MBs is decent enough to check e-mail and browse occasionally, IMO.

On average I use 20mb, basically I use it to check prices when I am at stores or to find directions. Sometimes it is slow which is why I wondered if I can do 4g with it.

I called verizon and the lady was clueless. She said she doesn't think I can use the plan on other smartphones because they use too much data compared to my droid x  I turn 3g on only when I use it.

Did you happen to ask them about that promotional $20 plan I linked to above?

No because I don't want to spend more money, $15 is bad enough, it's the most I am willing to pay for the convenience of mobile data.

Yeah you can keep your plan shouldn't matter what phone you go to. (VZW will probably tell you otherwise because I don't think it's suppose to)

If you don't believe me go to a store and ask them to ring up the phone you want. If it keeps your data plan buy it, if not leave. It won't matter if you buy @ full retail or upgrade the process is the same for activation and won't have any effect on whether or not you can keep your current plan.

I don't know how you could stay below 150mb on a 4g phone though. That's impressive if you can.

yea i don't know how any one can stay below 150mb on a 4g phone .

I hit 900 mb on my unlimited 3g I can only imagine what it would have been on 4g too bad there is no point to getting a 4g device as there are currently no plans to put it here....
