Rig Component Breakdown:

RAM: Corsair 12GB (6X2GB) 1600MHz Dominator
Motherboard: Asus Rampage II Extreme
Graphics Card: Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 5850 1024MB
CPU: i7 920 D0
Power Supply: Cooler Master Silent Pro Modular 850W
Case: Silverstone RV02
HDD(s): 3x Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB
Sound: Asus Xonar DS

Cooling:
Prolimatech Megahalems Rev B
- 2x Scythe Kaze-Jyuni (Push//Pull)
3x Silverstone 180mm Case Fans (Intake, Bottom)
1x Scythe Kaze-Jyuni (Top, Exhaust)

The rig is about a 14 months old.
There is no dust in the rig.
All components are at stock speeds/voltages.

The problem is, the Rig idles at: 40ºC on the 4 cores (CoreTemp), and peaks about 75ºC on the 4 cores.

These temperatures seem very high for the cooling provided, thoughts?

What's your ambient? What TIM did you use? Perhaps the TIM is uneven/too thick/too thin. Perhaps it was just a bad mount.

Arctic Silver 5, and I had been thinking the problem may be the seating/TIM, the rig has been moved several times since it's construction, so 40/75ºC are abnormal temperatures for this set-up?

Idle seems fine; load might be a little on the higher end, but it's not terrible by any means. I honestly wouldn't be too concerned, but if you're trying to get it cooler you could try reseating to see if that helps. I had a 920, too, but I always had HT off so my load temps only got into the low 60s.

I see, how is it people get the i7 to speeds like 4.0ghz+ on the stock cooler if I have such temps on definitely not stock cooling?

These are my temperatures from Everest. (You asked what my ambient temperatures are)
Motherboard 30 °C (86 °F)
CPU 31 °C (88 °F)
CPU #1 / Core #1 43 °C (109 °F)
CPU #1 / Core #2 39 °C (102 °F)
CPU #1 / Core #3 42 °C (108 °F)
CPU #1 / Core #4 37 °C (99 °F)
North Bridge 46 °C (115 °F)
South Bridge 43 °C (109 °F)
GPU Diode (DispIO) 52 °C (126 °F)
GPU Diode (MemIO) 47 °C (117 °F)
GPU Diode (Shader) 50 °C (122 °F)
GPU VRM 40 °C (104 °F)

I have a Lamptron FC5v2 fan controller also, the 4 sensors which i have lodged in various places around my motherboard are:
Top inside of case: 28ºC
Northbridge: 44ºC
RAM: 33ºC
Inside/Bottom of CPU Heatsink: 37ºC

Also, should I consider turning Hyper-threading off?

2 minute picture of the airflow in my rig for reference:

I'd reapply TIM to see if that fixes it; also to see how the spread was for the current layer. Another thing you could try if you are fine running at stock clocks is undervolting. You can probably shave off ~0.20 V and keep the same clocks.

Ambient temperatures were listed here earlier in the thread, unless these are not the 'ambient temperatures'?

So I re-seated the cpu/new TIM.

Old Temps:
Idle: 40ºC~
Load: 75ºC~

New Temps:
IDle: 35ºC~
Load: 65ºC~

Dialed it down another 0.4v

Load: 55ºC~

What voltages would be considered unsafe for this kind of thing? or should I just leave it alone?

AFAIK there isn't an unsafe low-end voltage. The only thing you should be concerned about when lowering your vcore is system stability.

So, amateur overclocked it to 3.8ghz in one go, while keeping the same lower vcore I had set it to, (1.18v), downloaded prime which I read I should check with, didn't have any problems after 3 hours of that, and 3 hours of playing 'Witcher 2'.

Temperatures remain unchanged from stock speed (2.67ghz), this is normal i assume?

That's really amazing to have a stable 3.8 OC while undervolting! As long as your temp monitor isn't broken I wouldn't complain, haha.

i'll run prime overnight tonight to get a more valid test of stability, but it seems fine so far.

So I did 20 hours of prime, the max temperature on any core during this time was 62ºC (according to Core Temp)

Intel I7 920 D0 (2.67 Ghz)

3.8Ghz // 1.171 Vcore

20 hours roughly means that it will hold stable?, Should I be satisfied and leave it as is?

for what your doing, that is going to be about as stable as you will get, if games start crashing, jump the voltage up a notch

Try running Intel Burn Test. You'll know if your system is stable really fast.

Yeah, if I can pass 40 runs of Linx I consider my overclock pretty stable. I run a couple of different types of prime runs too.
