After picking up a new macbook pro a couple weeks ago I've been noticing a clicking sound from the HDD when it's bumped even slightly. It seems a number of people have had this issue and related it to the Hitachi HTS545016B9SA02 drive found in some models and SMS feature parking the head to prevent damage.

Had anyone else noticed this? Is it worth trying to contact apple about replacing it with a different drive or should I just live with it? I realize it's a safety feature but this thing is so sensitive it goes off all the time just sitting in lap.

I have two of them, and neither one exhibits this. I'd suggest you take it in as it's still covered under warranty. Just take it to an Apple Store (make an appointment if you live close to one) or call them up and mail it in.

Good luck!

I would most definitely take it in to have it looked at, at the very least. It in fact might be defective, and they'll most likely do a closer inspection on it. If it indeed is defective, I bet they'll replace the drive or whatever other feature is causing it to do that (sensor?).
