Is that necessary for P4 boards? trying to run a 1.8 celery with just the proc and ram in the mobo but its not booting. powers up fine, AGP card doesnt complain, but nothing comes up on the screen. im betting PSU because I DONT have that connector in, nor can I get a PSU with one. i just want to make sure that all the components are OK, a PSU, I can fix, anything else, I dont have the money for.

yes that connector is a must without it your mo board will not get enough power. i think it's time for you to get a new psu

Mine fires up fine without the ATX 12v connector for some reason. But get a PS with the connector or get and adaptor.
