i just spent $30 on a 120mm Papst 4312MV two speed "Variofan" thinking it would work with an 80MM adapter on my heatsink. i was hoping i could tinker with it and get it to read my socket temp with a sensor attatched.

the problem is, the adapter creates pressure and it lets half the airflow leak back out around the edges of the blades.. i just sat in bios and watched the socket temp climb to 65 before i shut it off. is this 120mm > 80mm idea wrong?

anyone have this fan and know how it works and how to get it into high speed? here's its connection:

Code:
front of the molex, wires behind.

here are some of the fan specs (the only specs i can find at all. even from all of Papst's spec sheets and catalogues).

edit: ive also got this thread at Silent PC Review.

i think i just thought of something. this heatsink is a ~70mm Volcano 7. is an 80mm "shaft" of air trapping any air inside the sink?

i have a 120-80 converter, and i found the same problem if it was trying to force air onto the heatsink, but then i turned the fan round so it was sucking and it worked much better.

Don't know if it will work for you but worth a try
