120Hz VSync?

With my 120hz LCD monitors, if I set VSync on, it limits the displays to 60Hz. How is that VSync'ing? Does anyone know how to enable a 120Hz VSync and not the default 60Hz?

I either have to run my 120Hz LCD's at 60 FPS which kinda defeats the purpose or I have to let the FPS shoot up and let the graphics cards run at 100% at all times and waste energy. That is for games that I cannot set a FPS cap (which there are a lot).

I've yet to use a 120Hz LCD but I've considered issues like this may crop up.

Only a guess, but turn off vsync in the game options, use video card control panel to set vsync.

Do you have this issue with all games?
 
You need to enable triple buffering, because you are running into one of the disadvantages of Vsync, which is that if you are not able to maintain 120FPS, your FPS will drop by half, to 60FPS. To quote Tweakguides:

"When VSync is enabled, your graphics card becomes a slave to your monitor. If at any time your FPS falls just below your refresh rate, each frame starts taking your graphics card longer to draw than the time it takes for your monitor to refresh itself. So every 2nd refresh, your graphics card just misses completing a new whole frame in time. This means that both its primary and secondary frame buffers are filled, it has nowhere to put any new information, so it has to sit idle and wait for the next refresh to come around before it can unload its recently completed frame, and start work on a new one in the newly cleared secondary buffer. This results in exactly half the framerate of the refresh rate whenever your FPS falls below the refresh rate."

The solution is to enable (or force) triple buffering. If the game has a triple buffering setting, use that. If it doesn't, you'll probably need to use Rivatuner/EVGA Precision/MSI Afterburner to force it.
 
I've forced triple buffering and VSync in nVidia control panel, yet I still get only 60FPS with a 120Hz LCD. This is playing a game in which when VSync is off, I get 200+ FPS so I am not getting the halved-reduction to 60 FPS.

Forcing triple buffering in the Nvidia control panel only works for OpenGL games, and does not work for DirectX games. You can only force triple buffering for DirectX games with RivaTuner, EVGA Precision or MSI Afterburner.

Some games may have internal FPS limiters. What games specifically are you seeing this in? Edit: no, never mind, if you're able to run them at 200+ without Vsync then that's not it.

To be specific, the tool you want is D3DOverrider and it's included with RivaTuner, but not directly within RivaTuner (it's a separate application).
