I'm going to be purely gaming but I'm stuck on whether it should be glossy or matte...

I hear all the stuff about how glossy is "more vibrant and of higher quality" when it comes to colors but does this hold any weight? I mean the matte screens are at %72 gamut so they aren't they just all at the same level? Or do the glossy ones really trump in terms of performance? (disregard the issue of reflection/glare etc. only quality please)

As for the laptops with 120hz screens I'm looking at Sager offers laptops with matte but other brands such as Toshiba offers glossy (not sure about this maybe that one's matte too) with the Qosmio model. So I'm trying to decide between the two really...

Thanks for any help you may offer.

The main thing glossy gets you over matte is more light transmission. That's why it is so popular on laptops. The more light that gets through, the less backlight you need to get a given brightness and hence less energy usage. It isn't night and day or anything, but it is real.

The downside is, of course, the reflections and glare.

Colours are not a function of the coating, but of the backlight. The "more vibrant" is mostly marketing and really means "brighter".

glossy bad. Dell/LG level harsh matte bad too. Somewhere in between. Much better :)

Depends where you are going to have the monitor. I have a perfectly matte Samsung for where my desk is at. I specifically bought it because I have windows in my apartment that glare directly on the desk surface. I have a glossy HP monitor which was great when I was in college and my loft blocked the light from the windows, but which I can hardly use now when there's daylight.

But, for a laptop it's a toss up. Because it's portable you might be using it in a variety of environments. You might be using it in an Airport where there might be a lot of windows and glare. Then ten minutes later you are on a plane with a relatively controlled light environment. I got a laptop so that I can game while visiting friend's houses and my parents; usually I'm in a controlled light area. My laptop has a glossy screen. My work laptop has a matte screen and it has come in handy while travelling.
