Hey.

I'm considering purchasing a new monitor for my new gaming rig. I currently own a Samsung 226BW S-panel. I'm used to the 1680x1050 resolution and I'm wondering if any of the 120hz monitors with this resolution is going to satisfy me. I'm also considering this resolution over the 1920x1080 because of performance issues (FPS wise).

Is any of these 1680x1050 120hz monitors any good?
 
There are only two for that resolution.

They are both first generation tech, and not suggested.
However if you can find one in a store you can test first, you may be ok with it. Just not worth gambling on imho.
 
Alright.

Which one of the current 120hz monitors out there would you recommend for gaming? 1920x1080 ones included.

I'm looking at the Asus VG236H, but it wont be out here in Norway until the end of September.
 
I have both and they each have their flaws. I don't care for the viewsonic osd and it's got more backlight bleeding compared to the samsung. But I'm more pleased with the picture on the viewsonic, especially while gaming. I will say the viewsonic does sit higher than the samsung and that is mildly annoying. That being said, If backlight bleeding isn't a huge deal to you. I would get whatever is cheaper.

Whatever you do, I would skip getting the viewsonic vx2265wm because it has no osd. If 1680x1050 is what you want. Your choices are the 2233rz and the vx2268wm.

The new LG looks really solid and is available in Europe already. If you were in the market for either resolution I'd get the LG W2363D.

I will be getting a new monitor next week or so and I am looking for something I can aford. The Alienware at $500 is to much, would be nice if it was available w/o the glasses.
 
I'm pretty torn myself between the asus vg236h and the lg W2363D, flatpanels promised to do a detailed comparison between the two, i've read many reviews about the asus but not one reviewer even tried to measure its input lag, shadow detail and backlight bleed are very important in my case, the 2233rz makes dark games and movies look like ass due to the excessive backlight bleed on the bottom
 
You can always lower brightness a bit to combat the backlight bleeding. I use 24 brightness setting on my VX2268wm...
 
So far im betting on the LG, as it seems to be among the best in response rate and blacklight bleed.

However the asus does have the component input for Wii which is tempting. I have not seen enough reviews of the asus yet either.
 
Thanks for the suggestions. I think I'll go with the LG then. It sounds like a good choice.

The Alienware AW2310 does not come with glasses. Those are sold seperately. You are definitely getting a better quality monitor stand with this model compared to all the other 120Hz monitors. As of right now, the monitor is on sale at Dell for $439. I should get mine mid next week.

If the Alienware is too expensive for you (I wholeheartedly agree), the LG seems to be the best option.

The Bing Cash Back doesn't work for the Alienware monitor. :(
 
What about the Asus VG236H? I can wait another couple of months to buy a 120hz monitor if it's worth the wait. To me it seems like all of the current 120hz monitors have their own faults. Backlight bleed, incorrect color representation, lack of osd settings, below average contrast ratio, poor black levels etc..

It's not easy to pick a new monitor. Afterall, you're gonna look at it for a couple of years at least.
 
Only other monitor coming out is a Viewsonic 23" which is due out in October. Rumors have it that digital versus is not a good place for the input lag testing because how they test the monitor.

Depends on if you want a glossy screen or not, which the Asus has and the others (currently) don't.
 
For those waiting for the LG W2363D in North America don't hold your breath I asked them and this is the response I got:

"Unfortunately there has been no discussion on the release of the 3D monitors in Canada at this point. However they will most likely become available in 2011."
 
Lame, guess i'll shoot for the asus or the alienware depending on reviews that come out in the future.

I took a screen shot when I ordered. It clearly said Home, Home Office, & Small Business stores on the 25% pop-up window.

It did for me as well, but the pop-up I saw was for only 10%. But once that pop-up disappears, you're brought to the Small Business section and the AW2310 isn't in there. So you need to go to the Home & Office section to get to the monitor, and that's when Bing Cash Back was no longer applicable. :(

Maybe Bing changed something right after you ordered? Are you able to go back and see the same things you did before?

I dunno. My pop-up said 25% for sure, and was inclusive of the Home and Home office also. Anyways my AW2310 shipped already and the cashback is in my account now. Got it for $440*.75=$330.
