Looking for 2gb memory and a nice video card, anyone have any ideas?

I was reading elsewhere about building one with an asus barebones, anyone have a link to this?

Thanks

You might be able to get a somewhat decent gaming laptop for around 1200. If your going for an Asus barebones the best graphics card from them that you can get is the Mobility X1600, not a bad card however it can't play the newest games at the highest resolutions but does quite well.

Asus S96J Barebones

THe notebook I have in my sig gets around 4500 in 3dmark 2005 just for a rough idea of the performance of the x1600

I bought an $800 e1705 from outlet.dell.com with a X1400 ATI graphics card that I can eventually upgrade to a 7900GTX if need be, a 17 Ultra sharp screen, 512MB memory and a T2400 core duo processor previously ordered new. A couple days after I made my order I checked back for other e1705 deals and saw a duo T2600 with 2GB of 667 memory, 80 gig 7200RPM hdd and a 7900GS graphics card for $1300 refurbished. So your best bet will probably be to go to the dell outlet store during business hours when they update it select the e1705 or whatever you want and keep hitting submit and wait for a good deal (you shouldn't have to wait long).

alienware almost had me, but it needed more ram and it needed a better video card. not worth it

You can build a E1505 with parts from eBay for about $1300:
T2500
2GB 667 RAM
6800 Ultra
DVD-RW drive
80GB 7200RPM SATA HDD

I think anyway, heh

or buy one knew for 900

Building one yourself doesn't really seem to save you any money...and then you don't have a warranty, no thank you.

I like dells 3 year warranty and 3 year accident insurance, I will go through them once theres a good deal to be had.

You can configure a Toshiba Satellite A100 with a GeForce chipset and a fast processor for about $1300.

I do have an EPP coupon from my company...hrm i'll give it a shot.

Dd you have to buy security software? because its making me buy their mcaffee crap. Or buy an expensive warranty. =(

What's GRAW? And better yet, is there an acronym dictionary for all the game names that so frequently don't get spelled-out?

well, technically, that's GRAW is the name of the game.

also, if the GeForce chipset you are talking about is the 6100, it's really not worth it. the 6100 is pretty much a step above GMA950 but many steps below the likes of the x1600, even the 7300 Go

EDIT: NVM, it is a 7300 Go. Meh, performance on this beast is a bit worse than the x1300 (which would then not make it a beast, eh?).

That's huh?

I searched for it, and maybe the game codename47 is playing is "Ghost Recon Advanced Warrior". But even now that I know that, I'm not any further along because I don't know how demanding that game is, and of which subsystems.

That $899 I quoted was the base price. For $1200 you could of built a decent laptop.

The Alienware m5550 is expandable up to 2 gb of memory, and has an option for the Nvidia Go 7600 video card. If you had gone w/the Ati x1400, you could later have upgraded to the Nvidia Go 7600. The video cards are MXM, type II socketed.

The Nvidia Go 7600, w/it's 256 mb of dedicated video memory is a very good mid-level video card. It's no Nvidia Go 7800 or 7900, nor ATI x1800. Those three cards come only w/the top or the line laptops. Good luck finding a laptop w/any of those cards for $1200.

Right now you can get an Alienware m5550 laptop:

1.66 GHz Core 2 Duo CPU
512 mb PC2-5300 DDR2 memory (expandable up to 2 gb)
Nvidia Go 7600 MxM Type II video card, w/256 mb of dedicated video memory
(ATI x1400 w/128 mb of dedicated video memory comes standard and can be upgraded later to the Nvidia Go 7600)
15.4" 1280 x 800 Display (only one available)
8X Dual Layer DVD+/-RW / 24X CD-RW Combo w/Software
Windows XP Home OS w/SP2

$1249.00 as built. Up to last Monday, it was $1149.00, due to a back to school sale.

The cpu is upgradeable and so is the video card, pending the availabilty of s faster video card.

I just purchased the m5550 myself with:

2 GHz Duo 1 Core
(The Core 2 Duo just got released, which I missed by a few days , but the Core 1 Duo is upgradeable to the Core 2 Duo, w/a BIOS upgrade :D )
Nvidia Go 7600 video
15.4" 1280 x 800 Display (only one available)
512 mb memory (I just upgraded to 2 gb for $160)
60 gb HD
Windows XP Media Center Edition OS w/SP2
2 year warranty

cost, w/o the 2 gb memory, $1645.00.

Oh and it runs Oblivion w/o any problems. The graphics are absolutely smooth and sharp. Graphics playing Oblivion, 1024x768 - best graphics, 1280 x 800 Wide Screen - max best performance.

No complaints so far about the m5550.

So, again what are you looking for, for $1200?

With the settings turned up Ghost Recon Advanced Warrior is pretty demanding game. The XPS m170 has the 7800GTX which is a great all around mobile graphics set up. It supposively performs about like the desktop version 7800GT. The Dell XPS is a great little rig and I'm typing on it as we speak :)
