12 volt rail droping

I just put together a new rig, P4 2.8 on a P4P800. It is clocked at 3.36 at default voltage atm. I am using the same power supply I had with my old system, enermax 465. It is about 3 years old.

I started to notice that when I start doing anything processor intense that I could hear my fans slow gown. So I started keeping an eye on my voltages. Well my 12 volt rail drops from 11.8 to around 11.4 when I am really putting aa strain on the cpu. I never had this problem with my old rig, tbird 1200, and was wondering if this is a common thing for the newer hardware or do you think my PS is dieing on me?

Thanks

That is a huge drop! How are you monitoring your voltages?

The only way to know for sure the true voltages on the ps is to connect it to a multimeter. Assuming that your utility is reporting them correctly, you need to replace that weak POS.

Look at getting either an Antec or a PC Power and Cooling.

Its quite possible that your power supply has taken a few power hits over the years and just cant perform as well.

Just for kicks, you might want to clean out the power supply. If its coated in dust inside, some of its internal parts may be running a little over-tempurature and causing it to sag. Also make sure its fan(s) are still working ok. I recently squeezed an extra 5 months out of an old power supply doing just that. While you're in there, look for leaking caps or other signs of wear n tear. If you see anything really obvious, then its time for a new one. Just dont fry yourself in there, k?

Thanks black and Ignad, will do what you guys sudgested and see what I can come up with.

4keatimj, you kinda lost me there. I dont know how uping the voltage to my processor would solve the problem of my power supply droping volts when the processor is under strain. Seems to me if I put more to the processor then it would take more from it than it is now. I could be wrong though.

youre right it would make the problem worse but might help stability of your processor if thats an issue.

im having the same problem with my vantek 530watt whch is abotu a year old but it has always been low.

11.8 idle 11.5V load it doesnt look good but i dont think its causing any problems

if your in the market for a new PSU the fortron 530 watt has ajustible voltage rails so you can make sure your 12V is actually 12V. Some people seem to think highly of that power supply here.
