Network World has an interesting piece about 12 spam research projects that show promise in curbing the daily flow of spam into our inboxes. I've personally found image and PDF spams to be the worst right now for me personally, and these spams top the list, along with phishing and "spit" (VOIP spam).

Below is a list of a dozen research projects underway that focus on new technology and techniques to stop spam. While in many cases these projects are reacting to exploits already in use, such as image spam and phishing, the work by these researchers is designed to counter spammers’ current developments and may also lead to prevention of future ones. This list, by no means complete, contains select papers recently made public.

meh, gmail. And if you're crazy enough to not use gmail, use popfilter with your other mail. Spam hasn't been an issue for me in years. I don't know why it still is for anyone else. I rarely get anything in my gmail account's regular inbox, it's automatically filtered into their spam box. And before gmail, popfilter did an excellent job of catching everything else after a very short learning period.

my gmail account has a few spam leakers a week. The most recent were actually old fashioned pure text spam.

No system is perfect. I rarely see any in my gmail inbox. I saw even less with my trained popfile and the email address from my ISP. Either way, I never see enough to actually bother me. Sounds like I see even less than you do in my gmail box.
