Rut ro... looks like Handbrake is owning my 2500k at stock clocks on a stock cooler. Thermostat is set to about 75 degrees. Is above 100 degrees C normal on 100% usage over four cores on a 2500k? Or is the MSI Control Center software trying to give me a heart attack?

i've never seen processors working stably above 100 Celcius, i wouldn't be surprised if that temp is wrong.
What does the temp show on idle? How hot is it where you live?
 
The software is wrong, intel proccessors downclock themselves severly at 99 degrees and completly shut down soon after that.
 
Make sure you pput on the stock cooler correctly.

it is very easy to mess up and it really shows when you do.
 
Just installed Core Temp. It's reading about the same as Control Center at idle. (Around 69C.) This seems too high. Core Temp reports about 98 C under load and it tops out. I'll install Realtemp later. Besides a loose HSF, what should I look for to determine if it's not seated correctly? Also I suspect I'll need to put new thermal paste on the chip (I was using the stock stuff before.) What's a good, easy to use TIM? I also might just go ahead and grab an aftermarket HSF. Any recommendations for around $30? Cooler Master Hyper 212+? Should I just use the TIM that comes with the heat sink?

I'm in Nebraska, but I have AC. Thermostat is set to 75, ambient in the computer room is a few degrees higher.
 
You're using stock cooler? That kind of explains it if that's the case.

That Cooler Master is pretty good HSF if you want to go with that. Not too many at that price point that will beat it.

Overstock's price will be hard to beat.

The stock TIM should be up to the task. You can also grab one of the best and very easy to use Arctic Cooling MX-4 if you want to try something else. MX-2 and MX-3 versions work well too.

I think its the thermal sensor thats messed up, otherwise i'd have to ask....(forgive me) did you put thermal paste on, and make sure its clamped down tightly and properly on the cpu?
 
I am using the stock cooler and stock thermal pad. It is clamped down using the stock Intel mechanism and appears to be tight (I checked, it doesn't want to wiggle and the attachment pins are through the backside of the motherboard.)

you have to be able to see a little black piece protruding through the white part of the pins or the cooler is not properly attached.
 
So one of the four black pins wasn't completely seated. I pushed that pin down, checked the other three, fired the system up, and still idling in the upper 60s low 70s. I'm guessing the thermal paste is screwed up now from not having even pressure on it.

I'm thinking that rather than spending $8 on MX-4 and using it on a stock Intel heat sink, I'd be better off with a 212+ and using the paste that comes with it for $26 (prices include shipping.)

My other concern is one of noise. Is the 212+ a loud HSF? A few reviews made it seem like it was middle of the pack for noise, but louder than a stock fan. I'd be willing to pay a premium if I could get something quiet enough I didn't notice it above background/case fans in the Antec 300. Any ideas?
 
The stock fan for the Cooler Master spins at max of 2000 rpms. I believe it's a PWM fan so it should throttle according to the temp once you set it up in bios. Basically, you're not going to hear it unless you start stressing the CPU.

yes you are far better off with the 212+.. well worth the 26 bucks. and its definitely quiter then the stock fans on a antec 300.
 
If you wanted to pay a premium for a quieter heatsink, there is the Thermalright HR-02 Macho.

It's huge, so this assume you can fit it. It's also out of stock at FrozenCPU ($43 + shipping). I think I read something about TR coming out with a new, more compatible mounting bracket (didn't fit on some Asus boards).

Of course the noise is primarily dependent upon the fan, so the obvious solution would be to undervolt or replace the fan on the 212+

Well, I purchased the 212+ on Overstock. Now I just need to wait for it to show up. Thanks for the help!
 
hmm... most people seem to have lower temps than 65idle and 99 load on stock cooler 2500k. Strange, make sure you have good air flow through your case. Hopefully it was just not seating properly and the new heatsink will fix it, or maybe the sensor is off.
 
why is your idle voltage so high?

I'd reset your bios to defaults, somethings not right with the voltage it's using.

did you save a profile, update the bios, and then reload the profile ?

I'm using the default setting in Control Center. Here's the settings. I'll check the BIOS too. VID in Core Temp is 1.2260 v.

I can't help but notice the 40x multiplier and 1.3661 vid in your idle screenshot in post #8. I think that could explain the temps you're seeing. I know you said stock clocks, but are you absolutely sure you don't have some kind of auto-OC turned on somewhere?

Hmm I messed with OCing a bit a few weeks ago, but I thought I'd put it all back to 33. I'll check when I get home tonight.
