I'm looking to upgrade a 1150 system I built 2 years back with an affordable cpu. I know the mainstream intel platforms probably don't have too many xeon equivalents.

What is my best option, price-wise, to get a quad core replacement for the original g3258, dual core, I put in.

Thanks in advance.

Xeon E3 V3 is what you want to look for.

One very common example is the E3-1225V3. Quad core, no HT so 4 threads only. The problem is that these are normally $150 and up.
Another issue is that some of these 1150 Xeon cpus have disabled IGPU so no onboard video output. The E3-1220V3 is an example. If the model number ends with 0 or 1 there is no video. If its 5 or 6 then it has video. Still the cheapest one, E3-1220V3 is around $120 or so. You might not save much over an i5.

you know, I got my I7 4790s ES on ebay for like..180....about a year or so ago.... 4cores 8 threads...went from g3250 to this.... but I was certainly eyeing the xeon quad core + HT versions, ultimately it came down to saving a few bux

No reason for it to be a xeon, just seems that they have the biggest price drops after new xeons come out, the 1366 ones are stupid cheap. It doesn't look like these ones have had an equivalent drop. Was looking to see if anyone else knew of any hidden gems.
