Which socket will house the NEXT chip from intel? 1150 or 2011-latest version?

Trying to decide what to get my folks, so we can simply upgrade CPU next go around vs mobo and ram again.

Broadwell desktop is supposed to be 1150 and run on Z97 last I heard, but this will be the end of the line for 1150 I'd imagine and won't be much faster than Haswell Refresh.

I'd doubt your parents need an enthusiast level 2011-3 Haswell-E either.

After those is Skylake on 1151 but the thing is, no socket lasts too long, will you really need to upgrade it? Just get them something decent now and it should last for several years.

yes, broadwell will fit in socket 1150 boards with Z97.. but as broadwell its a short haswell refresh the next year (Q2 2015) and only to mainstream.. it will be rapidly replaced by skylake at the last quarter of 2015.. socket 2011-v3 will not receive i7 version of broadwell, only Xeon chips..

It's been about two years since I upgraded my parents X2 7750 with 2GB RAM, a spindle hdd, and Vista to a Z77 3570K with 8GB RAM, 256GB ssd, and Win7. With their typical use, I expect an extremely longer life cycle out of the 3570K than the 3 years with the Kuma.

My point is: Don't worry so much about socket life and upgradability. Get them a decent Z97 1150 MoBo and put a dual core Celeron or Pentium in it if you have to in order to save money. 1150 i5 and i7 offerings are going to be available for a long time to come either new or used...and there's your upgrade path. :)

What is purpose of computer?
Catch 22 is DDR4 is being released. Personally not at all sure price is justified by performance. At least not yet.
For most people first generation chips are still fair to good, and Sandy Bridge/Ivy Bridge do not require upgrade.
Says the guy still on Sandy Bridge (have to update signature, went to 2500Ks Z68 from H67)
A z97 build, unless there are dramatic changes, should be good for 4-6 years anyway. Programs have to run on old hardware, very few take full advantage of "latest and greatest."
Upgrading to all SSD is the current "most beneficial" upgrade. That and quality backup.

DDR3 is EOL, z97 and Broadwell will be the last Intel platform to use it. However, a 6-core Haswell is likely major overkill for your parents. An SSD would be a far better investment for them. I'm willing to bet that if all your parents do is browse the web and check emails, an i5 4670k at stock will last them 10+ years.

Couldn't pass this up. Wanted them to have the i7 but the deals weren't as good as this for price/performance. My parents system also handles a couple video cameras (security), and does mild gaming (7970), and they utilize multi-monitors and multitask, so not "normal" parent simple internet usage.

1 x ($239.99) Intel Core i5-4690K Devil's Canyon Quad-Core 3.5GH $239.99
1 x ($119.99) GIGABYTE GA-Z97X-SLI LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA $119.99
1 x (($98.99)) DISCOUNT FOR COMBO #1874330($98.99)

I snagged one of these CPUs for $185 from TD, this deal is even better IMHO.

Sounds like a good system that should take care of their usage needs for awhile.

I still believe that the skylake that is released next year will be the ~4W SoC chip and that the desktop skylake will be Q2 or Q1 2016.

As long as they get Skylake-E out by the end of 2016 whatever they do is fine with me.
