Your bill will be affected yes...by how much? Depends on the machines.

When AT&T took over SBC they cleared out their old server machines and my mom was able to hook me up with a few dual socket Xeon rack servers...they are still sitting in my room waiting for a rack mount to put them on hehe...and really I have no clue how to use these the way they were intended for :p
 
7 computers, even if they're old, will not be an insignificant power draw. You're going to pay probably up to $20 a month for these machines to run depending where you live.
 
Depends on the power draw per computer. My old XP series computers were real hogs, drawing between 120w and 138w (stripped down to the barebones). My dual core machines run 153-170w each. Less power per core.

I found that my electric bill went up by $7-8 per new machines. If your systems are pretty old, figure maybe $5 per machine. Double that in the summer because you will need AC to keep those machines running most likely.
 
running full blast im sure you will blow a breaker if they are all on the same breaker..

unless your one of the lucky ones with a breaker bigger than 15/20 amp and dont run anything else on that breaker (or have 2 for one room...)
i would put them into a guest bedroom, or into the garage on a table with a network switch and wireless dlink dwl2100ap linked to your wireless network (if you have one)
 
If I were in your position, I'd part out all those systems (or sell them whole), and use the money to buy some newer Core2Duo setups. You'll get more ppd, spend less on your electric bill, and perhaps even make money in the process. A single Core2Duo setup running the SMP client can get close to 1000 ppd. You'll have a hard time getting that much with all those older systems put together!

So sell the parts, build a new C2D system, and give the leftover money to your parents so they can go out to dinner somewhere nice.
 
If you can sell like 5 or 6 of them and get about $250, you can use that money to buy a cheap C2D and mobo to transplant into the last machine. That one C2D box using the SMP client can do at least the same amount of work using much less energy. There are a few mobos that can use DDR memory. You won't notice the performance difference.

Once I had all these on one circuit breaker....
Pentium D 820 at 3.4ghz
Pentium D 920 at 4.2ghz
Opteron 165 at 2.8ghz
Opteron 165 at 2.6ghz
X2 3800 at 2.7ghz
A64 3700 at 2.5ghz

They would run fine with a couple incandescent bulbs on the same breaker. But once the tv (small 13" CRT) would get turned on it would trip the breaker.

So 7 computers on one breaker would be REALLY close to tripping it. Might wanna spread them across 2 breakers.
 
A 15A breaker will give you roughly 1800W of power. Spread across 7 systems, that's about 250W apiece. Depending on the age of the computers, that might end up being well below or well above the limit.

Really? I've always heard that for a modern-ish computer you should budget about $10 a month to run it 24/7 all month long. Not sure if that takes into account a full load or not... just read it somewhere.

it probably didnt, and the $20 a month is a pretty rough estimate since each computer is different and electric prices are different too.
