1090T voltage reported wrong?

I'm trying to overclock my 1090T using a MSI 890GXM-G65. The problem I'm having is that no matter what I set the CPU voltage to in BIOS both Core Temp, and CPU-Z report it as 1.325. Am I doing something wrong, or is there a bug in both of those programs?

According to coretemp and cpu-z show mine at 1.30v.As long as I know what my bios states I am fine
 
My motherboard has the same problem. No matter what I set the CPU multiplier and voltage at in the BIOS, it boots up at default. I'm using AMD Overdrive to get past it until a BIOS update is released.
 
no issues here on a Crosshair III, interesting considering the guy above me has an M4A79(very similar) and has the same issue....then again i'm not shooting a 4.0 OC atm :p
 
My stupidity might be to blame here. Whats the difference between "CPU Voltage", and "CPU VDD Voltage"? I've just been messing with "CPU Voltage".

Update:

I bumped up the "CPU Voltage" to 1.48, ran Prime95 for a few minutes and all of the sudden the computer shutdown and my power light on the front of the case started blinking. Now it won't power on anymore!

clear your CMOS/reset BIOS, your botched your OC

edit: what speed are you going for that needs 1.48 v ?
 
1.48? damn, you would need some serious cooling to handle a high voltage like that. maybe it overheated, like w.feather said, reset your cmos and try again
 
an H50 should be able to handle the heat at 1.48v (my Core Contact does just fine at that, with a room at ~85F), but what speed were you going for ? did you up your memory to match ?
 
I was going for 4.0GHz. I hadn't touched any memory settings yet.

Clearing the CMOS didn't help. Great, now what do I do? This is my first OCíng disaster.

Bladestorm..........make sure you keep your mosfet area actively cooled. My board is bricked because it overheated. It only took 10 minutes in my case to do it (also using the H50). Mine was getting some air from the fans in there, but obviously not enough. The only voltages that were upped were my CPU (1.41) and my VDIMM (1.67)

I get the same results with my VID. Actually, depending on whch core CPU-Z or Core Temp is reading, I'll get values from 1.2, to 1.3, to 1.45 (which is reading one of the Turbo Cores).

Could you also tell me what mobo revision you have? ( I have 1.0). Thanks.

if the fans turn on but nothing else does ya probably bricked the board and killed the mosfets.. but since it is a GX board strip everything to the bare minimum to get it to run.. use the onboard video unplug all the hard drives and use 1 stick of ram and see if it boots up..
 
Didn't see your last post.............unplug your 4-pin motherboard power connector. If it powers on but won't POST, your board is bricked, just like mine.

This is exactly what happened to mine, except I was running LinX. This board has serious issues.
 
+1 there to the bricked idea, sounds like you messed up the MOSFET's and such, try the unplugging of all non essential parts, to limit it(swap RAM at first if it doesnt work with one stick)

Like I said the fans don't exactly turn on, they spin about a quarter of the way around, and that's it. I'm talking fractions of a second.

What do you mean by that? Are GX boards special in some way?


I can't do anymore testing till after work, but would it be worth my while to go to MicroCenter on my lunch break and pick up a new board? What are the chances I fried the CPU instead of the board?
 
At 1.48v you should still be alright and within operational limits acorrding to AMD.There is still a chance it is functional.I had a situation like your's.Leave all power off and take bios battery out for at least 24 hrs and see if it will fire back up.On the safe side at lunch have your'er power supply checked you never know.
 
Max recommended voltage is around 1.55 I think. I have been running mine at 1.47 since day 1 and no problems or high temps...

Do you have any extra cooling on your NB?

Even if I end up having to get a new motherboard, continuing to use the H50 has me worried. What's to stop the new board from frying in 10 minutes?

getting a board designed/made for OCing....the 890GX chipset is a great overclocking chipset, but the majority of the boards are not made to overclock.....however alot of the 890FX chipset boards are designed to overclock.....meaning they will have heaftyier cooling on all essential parts...


the H50 did NOT(well probably did not) cause your board to malfunction, its just the board took a shat and didnt recover :p

i would say go with the ASRock that martinje posted, it seems from what ive read that BIOstar is slow to update BIOS and ive never personally seen them as a high performance brand....

honestly if youve got the cash i would just get the Crosshair IV and be done with it....thats why I went and got the Crosshair III, figured hell go all out now, and it will live long enough for bulldozer and beyond :p

Blade, every single system I've ever built for myself was overclocked pretty heavily. I've NEVER had a system fail due to overclocking.......only bad caps in the Socket-A days. I've put systems through much more than this board.

Pull your MSI box out and look at the monikers on it:

"Easy Overclocking Technology"
"Gaming Series"

Let me draw attention to this particular moniker describing the NB/Mosfet cooling:

Heat Pipe Design
52C Lower Temperature
EXCELLENT AIR CONVECTION
Average temperature lower than 52C IN HIGH LOADING
MSI HEAT PIPE EXTREME COOLING

In the manual it says to pay attention to CPU overheating, not the mainboard

In the Overclocking description it says:

"This mainboard is designed to support overclocking. However, please make sure your components are able to tolerate such abnormal setting while doing overclocking...." and then goes on saying any attempt to operate blah blah blah.

What this says to me is that the motherboard itself is engineered to handle overclocking but you the user must ensure that the components, ie CPU, video card, RAM...are able to tolerate abnormal settings as well.

EDIT: Even their website pimping the board advertises: "Superb Stability: Military Class Components"

I'm OK with frying my CPU, RAM or Video card if I don't take precautions to protect them.
You didn't fry your motherboard Blade, it's a bad design.

I would have expected to see instability long before failure.........I'm sure we'll see more posts on failures of this board unless others have somehow gotten a newer revision.

Get an RMA from MSI and make sure you post here: http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=248198
as there are supposedly reps watching that thread, plus one other guy has had his fail.

isnt that what we all said? that the board was bad? .......


anyhow, your CPU should be fine, you never went outside the engineered limits, and the H50 would keep it cool enough anyhow at 1.48 v
