1080p Decoding Issues

A friend of mine recently built the following HTPC:

Video Card: ATI 5670 512 MB
Motherboard: Asus M4A785-M
CPU: AMD Phenom X4 9600 Black Edition Quad Core 2.3 Ghz. PN: HD960BWCJ4BGD (Cannot provide link atm).
Memory: Patriot 2x2GB DDR2 PC2-6400

He has reported skipping/stuttering in 1080p .mkv files with h-264 encoding using VLC. I have informed him that VLC can be a bit of a resource hog sometimes and there are argueably better options, that require a bit more of setting up. I plan on setting these up for him later.

Disregarding the player - shouldnt this be more then capable of handling 1080p video files?

He is running Windows 7 and doesnt do anything else while trying to view this videos. I am just trying to get an idea of what problems could exist other then the video player before I go over to his house and try to remedy it.

any codec packs installed? I have run into a problem myself with stutter before. But once i installed shark codec (Shark007) it went away.I am sure there are other ways also for it not to sutter.

but his setup should be able to do it. I did read that coreavc is a great codec but its a paid program
 
check the cpu and gpu usage. make sure proper codecs are installed, although VLC doesn't use codecs (the latest version i believe does support gpu acceleration).

i would recommend using a DXVA player and the proper codecs.

you'll need ffdshow and haali splitter. best to use k-lite or shark007 codec pack
 
Do not use codec packs, they are junk. All you should need to play back 1080p x264 is haali media splitter and ffdshow (the latest ffdshow tryouts version, not the original ffdshow that is no longer in development). Also yes, that Phenom should be more than capable of playing back 1080p even without the aid of DXVA.
 
Technically that's correct but if you want hardware accelleration for VC1 encodes, subtitles, bitstream audio out, or downmixing DTS audio to DD you will need the Shark007 pack or at a minimum ffdshow.

the k-lite and shark pack only installs ffdshow, haali, and the mkv registry hacks, and a couple other splitters. these are far from the old school "codec" packs.
 
Ugh, never suggest the garbage that is Klite. Even mentioning it in the same breath is bad enough.
 
Don't use VLC. Try Media Player Classic instead, and install CCCP to cover the codecs. Though I agree that ffdshow is probably one of the best h264 codecs out there, and really the only one you need most of the time.

I agree too. CCCP is the only "codec pack" I would serisously suggest (Shark's is good too but I had some issues with it and Win64... and all of my media on my HTPC). CCCP is pretty much just FFDShow anyways
 
The best part of Sharks pack is the UI, not the filters it includes.

I see, I use MPC-HC and 100% of my media plays without any codec packs. And I have subtitles too. :rolleyes::rolleyes:.
About the only thing I need to play all my media in wmc is haali splitter.
 
since you have a 5670, i would say use media player classic home cinema.

You'll be fine for the most part with the built in codecs.
