What is the number after the resolution, and what does it do? Does it hinder performace at all? Lower FPS? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks fellas
 
You know I was wondering this yesterday as well. I have two choices 1600x1200 60hz or 72hz...if I chose 72 my monitor goes out of sync and I cant play.
 
It is the refresh rate - the amount of times your moniter draws the image every second. Higher is better, but if you try to increase it above what your moniter supports, problems occur.

hz = number of fps your monitor can put out at any given resolution.

This is wrong. The hz is your vertical refresh rate. Only when you have v-sync enabled, is your framerate limited to your refresh rate. Vertical sync is used to prevent horizontal tearing. For example when you're turning in a game your picture may not be perfectly lined up vertically, but with V-sync on it will be.

Wrong. Your refresh determines how many FPS your monitor can show, it can not show you above the refresh rate. Enabling V-sync simply limits your FPS to a certain level so that it runs in sync with the monitors refresh rate. The main reason for enabling v-sync is to get rid of tearing when your FPS is so much higher than your refresh rate.
 
Listen, you may put out 10,000,000,000,000 fps from your graphics card but if your monitor only supports 1024by768@10hz you are only physically seeing 10fps.

Actually the hz in this scenario is some sort of calculated number from your vertical and horizontal refresh rates (in other words the number of fps your monitor can do at any given resolution).

You can turn off vsync and see those 10,000,000,000,000 fps on fraps or in a game but turn it on and you see what your monitor is really outputting (10fps).
