Hello. I'm seriously considering upgrading my pc within the next few weeks, and I've been doing a little research within the pc market. Currently I have a p3 1ghz, 512mb of SDRam and a GeForce2. Obviously I desperately need an upgrade. I apologize if this is the wrong place to ask such a thing or if it's been asked recently, I've searched the forum and haven't found anything similiar. I've never done this before so I'm slightly apprehensive about doing so, but I understand that it's a good opportunity for me, so without further adeu, here's what I'm looking at:

I have a mouse/keyboard/monitor/speakers/networking card/sound card/floppy drive/cd drives. I'm going to buy two hard drives(RAID)/Motherboard/CPU/Video Card/Ram/Case/Power Supply.

Currently I've been doing some shopping on newegg.com and have found these:

I'm open to any and all suggestions of what I should get, brand names, types, etc, everything. Generally I don't want to spend anything more than this, in fact I wanted to spend less but that's how things go I suppose. I'm going to use this computer for gaming/browsing internet mostly.

Two questions:

1. What brand name for a video card is good?

2. Should I get socket 754 instead of 939? The price would be similar.

I appreciate any answers anyone can give me, thankyou.
 
I would go with 939 for better upgrade options in the future...Also I think i would get a Vid Card with 256MB
Plus if you can wait it out you can get really good rebate deals on hard drives.

s939 is a really good idea... that's where it's at right now... they have stopped producing new s754 chips.

and i am on the nvidia side of the schism... i would reccommend a Sapphire Radeon 9600XT from Directron.com. You can see it here. it's a bit over your budget at ~$175 but it's almost certainly worth the $$$.
 
nice setup. I just hope you dont plan on moving that case around alot, its not much fun if you have to when its all filled up. Noticed you didnt have a heat sink for that processor listed. If you arent going to overclock i would suggest getting the retail boxed version since it has a 3 year warranty comes with a heatsink and monarch has the retail boxed for $160

You do realize that the video card you picked out is a stripped down version of a 6800GT. It has DDR memory isntead of DDR3, which means the memory must run at 700mhz instead of 1000mhz. Also, it has 128mb instead of 256mb. However that said, it is not a bad card for the price, it runs about in between the speed of a normal 6800 and a 6800gt.
 
I made a $10,000$ computer it was the best thing ever so just copy it and you will like it very much for long time i say...

No they haven't stopped producing the s754 chips. AMD says that each new chip will have 754 and 939 for a while still so that people who have the s754 mobos can upgrade the chip without upgrading the mobo... but who knows how long that will last, but they do say that they are going to release both versions of new chips.

they haven't stopped making the chips that exist now... but no new s754 designs will be made, i.e. they aren't gonna make any faster ones.
