Hi all

I have a $1000 to spend to build a new machine and would like the community's feedback on which way I should go.

What is the best AMD based system I could go with? What is the best Intel rig I could build?

I do want to keep some of my parts from my current rig, namely my Radeon 9600 Pro and 80G HD.

I would like to future-proof either rig as much as possible.

That adds up to $830, I would reccommend either getting the 9800 Pro now or save your money for one of the new gen cards...

You could go S939, but I think they are a bit overpriced still.

I've read on reviews that this processor is close to the preformance of the FX51

Ya i think you should go for some faster ram, also a gig of it if you want to get a good gaming rig
 
For the best future investment, get an A64 at least. Then some nice ram like the kingston mentioned above, and that should be fine to last you for a while. If you're content with your 9600 for now, keep that and save up and get an x800xt pe or 6800U sometime in the future when the prices drop to reasonable levels.

Other than that, all you need is a motherboard. Are you planning on overclocking ?

I generally recommend Abit, asus, and MSI. Just depends what features you want.
 
I would think that if I got an A64 3400, I wouldn't overclock it. I think their is no point to ocing. It had it's day during the PII/III era, but now that procs are at 2G and faster, the returns are not as great.

i take it you havent heard of a 2.4c or a athlon xp-m then... :rolleyes:

a64's dont overclock well anyway.

I figure playing games on an X800 Pro would be more fun than having a slightly faster CPU and RAM and a mediocre video card. This would be a nicely balanced system and would get you everything to play D3 or HL2 and games for the forseeable future. Your video card will be the big holdup.
 
This is true. Also, why buy a 3400 for ALMOST TWICE the price of the 3200? Just buy a 3200 and get a good video card, a better motherboard, or something. :eek:

I think I am leaning towards an AMD64 setup, using my current vid card for now. I think it is time to give AMD a go and see how fast they are.
