$1000 dollar non-gaming laptop?

So, I'm planning on buying my mom a new laptop for Christmas. She mainly uses word, excel, surfs the web, and watches movies/multimedia on her current laptop. I'd like to keep the price at $1000 Canadian or below pre tax. A couple of things I'm looking for in the laptop:

-Large hard drive for pictures/movie storage
-HDMI out to connect to her 1080p tv
-Good screen resolution/quality
-Good battery life
-15" screen
-$1000 Canadian price point or less

I'd like the laptop to be fairly future proof. Seeing as how she doesn't play games I figure a decent processor and fairly large hard drive will allow her to keep the laptop for a while.

Any suggestions?
 
You choose a lot with that budget for a non-gamer and future prepping won't cost that much so...

I guess I could just go to futureshop or best buy and grab something at that price point.
 
The 15" screen and good resolution/quality seem to be at odds with the price point.

How is her tolerance of small font and/or poor viewing angles?

Based on the usage model, anything with an SNB i5 should suffice, with discrete graphics being optional. What are the specs are the current machine?
 
Dell xps 15z

Great Screen, Above Average Speakers, huge hard drives, 5-6hr battery life.
