I'm looking to buy a good set of headphones, and I'm willing to pay in the whereabouts of $100 dolars. Obviously the cheaper, the better, but I'm just looking for the best price/performance I can get.

Anything that you need a pair of headphones for besides gaming (I have a headset w/ mic for that).

Well do you need closed or open headphones, is portability important, what kind of music do you enjoy, how important is comfort, etc?

Ok, any type of headphone is nice, portability is important, all types of music (from orchestral to hip hop), and comfort is third only to price and performance.

how about for a gamer? Portability is not an issue. I was thinking about the Sennheiser HD 497s...they're only 60 bucks on newegg. Is there anything better for around that price range?

The HD497's are easily more comfortable than the Grados and the Grados are only slightly better in quality. Odd's are you wont hear a differeance between them. I'd go for the 497's because u can actually wear them longer then 10 mins without your ears turning black and blue.

Grado SRs are less comfortable on my ears than 497's, but some folks also have serious comfort issues with the 497's depending on the size and shape of their ears. Your best bet is to audition them first to see what you like.

And the award goes to hooting_monkey for having the longest delay between double posts

Holy crap, the first time I posted it gave me an error. I left the window open for awhile, thinking it posted. I come back some time later, to find the error. I reposted, not looking to see if the first posted. OOPS. Ahh, no harm done. Atleast I get a record...

Sony mdr-7506's are pretty nice... ~$90

Had a set for a few years and love them.
