10 hours to format drive????

Just wondering if this is normal.

I have a 500GB HDD that I could not reformat through windows explorer.

I opened a command line and was able to start formatting the drive, but I'm getting a little more than 1% every 10 minutes. At this rate it's going to take 10 hours to format the drive.

Also the drive is not internal, I'm formatting through USB 2.0 so is that why this is taking an eternity???
 
The best possible speed for a 500gb drive over usb2, would be 4.4hours.

If it is doing a check, as will as a format, to locate bad spots, that means atleast 9hours.
 
USB 2.0 is rated for about 48MB/sec but in real life rarely tops 35MB/sec and commonly can't go above 15MB/sec, which would be roughly 10 hours for 500GB. I don't know why some USB 2.0 implementations are slower than others, but I have an Nvidia chipset motherboard that won't break 15MB/sec, while NEC-based USB 2.0 and 3.0 PCI cards plugged into that mobo do 30MB/sec in USB 2.0 mode.

Some programs can run SMART offline diagnostics even for USB drives, which can save a huge amount of time for USB 2.0, and one such program is HDDscan, available at HDDguru.com.
 
Pretty sure this drive is toast.

It keeps aborting the format around 16% in, and it's claiming over 1,000 bad sectors.

Don't know if that's a "high" number.
 
I have probably 20 hard drives here at work in my raid servers with a few bad sectors. To me as long as the # is stable and not growing these are not a real problem.
 
a bad sector is a problem, sure they can be replaced, i am in the same boat, i found i had one storage server that had a drive with just over 100 bad sectors but all were replaced.

Not replacing them to me is asking for trouble, especially if you have multiple drives in the same raid array with bad sectors..
 
I have had quite a few drives last for 5+ years with reallocated sectors. The problem is if the bad sectors are growing over time instead of if they are just from an isolated media defect.
