Ok, im not too sure if my friend is bullshitting me or not. But he says he has 10,000 that he not only HAS to blow on a system, but WANTS to blow on a system. WTF.
Ok, so he asked me if i could build it for him and i said sure, because it sounded like a pretty sweet project if he speaks truth.
So, what kind of specs should i be looking at for this UBER computer?
I can build regular comp and am pretty knowlegeable about them, but 10,000 rage comps are out of my league.

Im looking for advice on the components of the system:
- A sweet modable case
- 4x Opterons?? 2x?
- Where the heck can i find a MB that supports 4x opterons?
- A sweet 10,000RPM Raptor RAID array
- The VERY BEST VIDEO CARD, (did they ever produce any of those dual core 9700 pro's we saw pics of a while back?)
- Do regular ATX power supplies support these types of systems? (i know im going to need a fatty PSU though)
- 1 GIG of ram per CPU? 2GIGs per? 4!!!?

What else? Be creative, $10,000 were talking here, post your most fucking OWNAGE l337 fantasy system build EVER.

wait if he wants to blow 10K

Tell him to go blow the 10K on L systems Grand canyon moniter

Id say still though get 2x 74gig raptors. 4x250 gig sata hdds. 9800XT. And what would 4 processors accomplish him

What does he need this system for. Gaming. I guess dual cpu's arnt too great at gaming??

Crucial makes 2gb sticks

Corsair makes 1 gb sticks

what a waste of cash.
2-3K is plenty for a nice system, and I don't know anybody who can't use an extra 7K in the bank.

sorry, i call BS. everytime someone posts they have 10k to blow on a system, it ends up being fake.

There is no dual 9700 pro. 9800XT is the fastest. There is no such thing as one gig per cpu. If motherboard supports this much ram, then it supports. He just making up most of the stuff.

10k? damn he is either bs'ing you or very rich.

first get soem 15k rpm scsi drives.

8 -way opterons with as meny gigs of ram as you can afford.

lol assuming hs can blow that much.

For the video cards, this might be the time to test how good the über-expensive professional cards are at gaming :D

(1 Gb of video ram has to be good for something)

Opterons, no doubt. Preferably 4 way, 2 way if you can't find a motherboard... If it's two way, give each CPU about 2 gigs of ram for a total of around 4 gigs.

And WHY would you put raptors in a 10k dollar system? 15k RPM SCSI drives all the way, raid 5.

Or you could always give him a new prescott rig and phase change cooling to get it past 4 ghZ, 2 gigs of ram and dual 2001fps. That would be a nice little toy :)

Or build him a 2,000 dollar system and pocket the rest :D

no kidding...I don't know WHY Raptors come up in the discussion of really nice systems.

It's like if a guy wins the lottery and buys the nicest, newest Ford Escort out there:p

I checked the 8 way Opterons out and they are WAY expensive, unless i can find a 4X board that will house them, 8X is over 10,000 alone. So yea, im just seeing how creative you guys can be with a 10,000 dollar budget. I do beleive my friend is very rich, and/or is lying, but who cares, its still cool to talk about right? :)

With 10 large why buld your own? Go to Falcon Northwest instead.

Tell him to make a $3000 computer and get a 50" plasma screen for his moniter.

Or save it for when he really needs it.

yeah get him a T1 connection or something and make him host a game server for u or something

Boy, won't your friend be pissed if he actually spends 10 grand, only to find out the vid card is outdated in another 2 months.

Though, if he had this kind of money, I think he'd just toss that 9800XT or whatever into the trash and just buy a new one, cause he's just that rich.

Get an Itanium. It'll be as useless as him spending 10 grand on a single comp for stuff a $2500 computer would accomplish.

(Although it's only 512Mb. I guess that'll have to suffice.)

lol I figured, 3dlabs to the best of my knowledge is the most well-known super high-end video production card maker.

If he really is your "friend" how come you don't know much about his/his family's financial status. I usually don't go spouting off about how I don't know whether my "friends" are BSing me or not.

well you need to get out and meet more celebrities then.. ;)

if this guy wants $10000 on a computer though, he should buy one for say $3000, then have an account that is solely for computer upgrades, then just take from that whenever he wants to get the latest thing every few months. thatll last him a lot longer

Your friend must have a real small dick :p

I'd definitely check out voodoo.

There's another company that makes super high end systems with prometia chillers, but I can't remember what the name was. Unless you think you can build a system that looks like ten thousand dollars yourself, go for a prebuilt.

Personally I'd go with a 3k system + 5k plasma monitor + 2k surround sound system. THAT would be a sweet system.

two words:

BARCO LCD (or video wall) (thats 7k right there)
'
edit: just get a SGI or some other high end workstation like that

when someone says it for his friend 99% of the time, its for him

By the way, you're not likely to find any 4+ processor board with an AGP slot. So count that out and you save a bundle right there. That's all I'm going to say since this thread is probably shens anyway.

djgrfx, why do you need 2 DVD/RW drives?

save 100 and get one CDRW and one DVDRW:D

how about he gets 3 uber 1337 systems for about 3333.3333333(repeating) dollars a piece?

that way, he can set up some small LANs with what friends(if any) he has

- We both wish that, but no, my friend SUPOSEDLY mane a chunk of money off of some stocks recently and as he says, has no other use for it (yes, he is a retard) and wants to buy a comp with a 10,000 budget. He asked me to build it, because he would have someone else build it otherwise, so what the heck right?

2 things....

The 248's need DDR400, and the 3000G is overkill. The only difference between that and the 3000 is that it has Gen-lock and Frame-lock. Not necessary for all but professional users...
