10,000 RPM diffrence in games?

I am thinking of one day getting a 10,000 RPM hard drive, and put all my games on it and run everything else from my 7200 RPM hard drive. Will there actually be a noticable diffrence of loading times, FPS or anything when running games on a 10,000 RPM hard drive or should I just stick to a 7200 RPM hard drive?
 
It really depends on your system. You could have an amazing system where the 7200 rpm drive is the bottleneck, however its most likely that you won't benefit much with an everyday system.
 
Ok my system is the following:

P4 520 2.8GHz w/HT
512 memory(one day it be 1 gig)
160 7200 RPM hard drive
Windows XP Pro w/SP2
Sapphire 256MB X600 Pro(one day it would be either an X800Xl, 6800 GT, or a X850XT(not the PE just the XT))
 
Is it just me or was HT only enabled on 3ghz+ CPUs?
Anyways, back on topic, regarding your system I would say the CPU is the bottleneck, and the difference you see in games will be minimal if any. Thats a guess, but a "good" guess. Feel free to listen to some other people too, who may prove me wrong.

IWas working on a new dell today that had a 2.8 with HT. First noticed it after b0rging the box and seeing that f@h was only using 50%. So I fired up cpuz and sure enough.......
 
As always, a faster hard drive can sometimes speed up loading times, but it never increases framerates. No mechanical hard drive could ever keep up with the speed of system or video memory to the point where it would benefit frame-by-frame performance.
 
HyperThreading was/is available on all Pentium 4 "C" and "E" models, as well as all Pentium 4 500- and 600-series CPUs. It is true, however, that only one "B" model, the 3.06, offered fully functional HyperThreading. Before that, it was largely considered that HT was present on previous P4 processors, but not enabled.
 
I had an Alienware Area-51M with a 2.8GHz P4 w/HT, but due to mobo limitations it wasn't enabled. I think a 10K RPM definitely has its advantages and if you really want the best you can't go wrong.

Yeah, Alienware dropped the ball on that (again). Took them almost a year to fix it, even a BIOS fix couldn't fix it.

I have two raptors in raid 0. I saw increases in boot-up and load times. No real in game advantages.

We're supposed to be talking about increasing performance using 10k rpm drives, not HT. :confused:

I'd say no to difference, not from experience, but I know most games cache all game data into ram. When you run out of ram, however, game data is paged onto the harddisk. With that said, only saving / loading game data would be faster.
But, like a previous post said, a mechanical device can't keep up with something completely electronic. you're better of with a larger amount of ram than with a faster harddisk.

The 3.06GHz Pentium 4 was not a "B" as the processor was not a replacement for one previously offered at that frequency. It merely had a 533MHz FSB like many of the "B" processors that got the "B" designation for replacing previous 400MHz FSB processors at the same clock frequencies.

But yes, it is the only 533MHz FSB processor to support HT. Although the Northwood has HT built in to it's design from day one, it was never turned on until the 3.06GHz processor came out.

All "C's" got Hypethreading though. From the 2.4C to the 3.4C. All of them have it.

I myself have two 10,000rpm Raptors and I do notice faster loading times. Significantly faster in KOTOR 1 and 2. A few others also. Not earth shattering, but noticable.

get a gig of 3200 memory.
 
I'm the new pround owner of a 74GB WD raptor and I've noticed that windows loads way faster, file copying is a lot faster. I too have a 160GB Maxtor 7200rpm ATA/133 drive and I just got the raptor yesterday.

I've just installed windows and I've copied the whole Vavle folder from the 160GB to the Raptor in 3mins :)
 
I'll stick 2 WD 74 raptors in raid 0 and compare them against barracudas in game loading times. Give me a few days :)
 
I have 74GB Raptors in a RAID0, let me tell you that my game load times are many times less than those of my roomate on his poor dinky 7200rpm IDE drives :p

120MB/s throughput, yes please :D

 
Put your games on windows on the 10000rpm drive.
also, raid 0 does not make that big a difference in normal applications, look at anandtech review on this.
