You would still need quite a few of them, 6 or 8 probably, and a power supply and wiring to run them all

It could be done, but a few low intensity halogen lights with colored shades would do the same thing and be much easier

I think it would be cool... you'd need a standalone power supply, like has been said, and the way you mounted them would have to be conducive to hiding the inverters. Also, I'm not sure how long the wire from the PSU to the inverter can be before it starts losing power, so you'd probably have to tinker around with that.

How bout a disco ball instead ;)

Maybe not so subtle, but it sets the mood so much better.

You could take a piece of acrylic or glass and cut it to fit ur desk.. then put cold cathodes on the side and the whole top of ur desk would glow all cool like :D

I have 4 blue CCFLs in my car, and it looks really cool at night Try to use them indirectly. Like don't stick them on the wall, hide them under you desk or behind objects. This way you get that really nice glowing effect. Its so much better then looking directly into the light.

I had one taped to my wall a few years ago, used a 12v and lower variable wall wart to power it. worked really well except obviously it wasnt diffused at all. lit up most of the room though, at least around my bed where I had it. in the day or when I went to sleep id just crank it down, at night id have a nice nightlite to boot so i didnt run my ass into the wall if I had to get up and take a piss

CCFLs come cheap nowadays... and a small powersupply can be bought at places like bgmicro for a few bucks or if your looking for simplicity, which is what i would do, take a normal wall adapter and splice the wires... i was thinking of doing the same thing

another idea is to paint your wall with UV paint and get a 120vac UV light bulb aka "blacklight", that way your whole room glows and since its a lightbulb, the intensity can be controlled with a potentiometer.... you dont necessarily have to paint the whole wall... my room has pink because it used to be a baby room but me and my siblings grew up now but i never bothered to paint that room cus theres too much stuff in it so imma get a 120vac blackbulb and a potentiometer and get a pink flourescent highlighter and draw all over the wall in a good design or somethin so when i turn on the light at night, that design glows but no one can see it under normal lighting, heheheh

btw, do those black bulb work?... they look like a regular incandescent lightbulb except its got a black coating or something on the outside... are those really ultra violet lights?

warm at most.

CCFLs look bad directly on IMHO. They need to be hidden from direct sight and then you have something. Click Me

So maybe some crown molding on the walls and the tubes mounted to the tops?

The other thing is what I plan on doing after seeing nuclearsnake's fine work here: http://www.nuclearsnake.com/basement.html is using LEDs. This is just total sex to me... I'm all over it when I get the time. Course I'll be doing 4 colors to match the desk :p

I posted to share. I'm speaking for myself here, but I think that a lot of the old timers around here take it as a compliment when you emulate what they have done in the past directly or indirectly as an improvement or new twist on the old concept.
Unfortunately I also see the kids here get all pissy and yell "Hey, that was my idea and I did it first" It's prety pathetic IMHO. Anyway. I'd love to see you use something I did and maybe improve upon it.

My point is, I wouldn't feel like you took anything away from me or my mod, so knock yourself out.

BTW, that LED apartment is the fuckin shit. I've emailed that company prior to me posting :) to be continued
