Is there any reason for me to go to 1.5 gig of ram? I have 1 gig now and am a gamer. I have an extra dimm...Thoughts?

At the moment there is no need to have more than 1gig of ram...most enjoy 512 just fine...1gig being the icing on the cake. Unless you are doing a lot of Photoshop or video editing 1gig is more than enough.
twajetmech

If you have an extra dimm laying around... Why not?
It may slightly decrease load times... But if its just laying around go for it, its better in a computer than not in one.

I say 1GB of ram is great for right now unless you are working on like multiple CAD applications, Movie editiing, photoshop and having everything open at the same time....

Which most of us dont do so...

other than cost though, there's really no downside to having 2 gis to 1, is there? I'm building a new rig soon and figured I might just buy two 1 gig sticks. Total waste? Not too concerned with a couple hundred dollars more when I'm spending a coule thousand.

i have heard taht FAR cry and COD eat up a lot of ram, but I think that a gig should be plenty unless you are doing some mad graphics things or playing the above games. But if never hurts to have more.

It really depends on what your computer is being used for. Generally I feel if u have a gaming machine stick to the 1gb. Or if u are actually building a workstation then go for the higher amounts of ram.
Regarding higher than 1gb performance. There is a debate somewhat about whether populating 4 banks decreases performance. someone showed me a firing squad article about 4x512 actually decreasing performance where it is even less than 2x512. They make this claim based on benches and the fact that Intel supposedly tunes performance down to adjust with certain issues of populating all 4 banks.
On the other hand I was showed an Article from Anandtech that showed 4x512 did improve performance as somewhat expected from a 2x512 setup. Not exactly sure which is actually true, but perhaps it depends on what applications u are running and etc. as to whether the extra memory is worth it.
Oh, and it seems to not be as much of an issue on an AMD rig.

If ayone has anything else to add please do.

here's the anandtech article.

i was actually thinking of getting 2x1gb rather than 4x512mb if it makes any difference.

Just running UT2004 for about 2 hours eats up about 740MBs of RAM.

I don't know, but I were you, I'd get the 1.5GB. I'm looking for another 1GB to add to the gig I already have.

then the only problem is that 1GB sticks of RAM that run at good timings are expensive.

If you are willing to pay, which you imply that you are, there is no DISadvantage.

The optimal configuration for 875p chipsets is 4 DIMM slots filled. 865 i believe is still two though. Thats according to Anandtech and the Intel document sheets.

I've got 1GB of Mushkin PC3200 lvl 1 now and when RAM prices ever come back down, IF they do i may go ahead and buy another 2x512MB because games this year are going to start going up again as far as RAM requirements go. Doom3 is suppost to most likely use up around 2GB at high resolutions and full detail.

good grief, @ the rate RAM is inflating and the fact that demand will probably go up with new games is rather scary to me. I remember looking at some 2-2-2 special when they were like 250 or so for a 2x512 kit. Didn't think I needed such nice RAM and when I finally decided, sure why not, prices skyrocket to friggin $320!!! So, I then decide to pay a premium for 2x512s of lvl 1 PC3200 and the day after my purchase those go up and the 2-2-2's go up to $350. As far as I am concerned these prices are absolutely rediculous and again frankly has me worried. Can anyone say definitively whether this is actually corporate price gouging, cause I read an article that stated that Infineon, Samsung and the other chipmakers were being indicted, I believe, by a federal grand jury about this issue. It seems that the trend was simply one chipmaker would raise prices and it was commonly understood that all the others would follow suit. Can't find the article, but if anyone has anything to add to this it would be much appreciated.

Oh, and burningrave, thanks for the AnandTech article. I posted that in the above post.:)

I end up using >1GB of RAM all the time... it doesn't really take all that much... a little audio editing eats up RAM like there's no tomorrow! :D

I went from 2x256 Mushkin pc3200 lvl 1 to 4x256, all 4 matched, populating all 4 mem slots.
Good news= Far Cry loads quick as does everything else.
Not so good= PAT is disabled when all 4 slots all filled. When overclocking I just can't get as high a fsb using 1:1 mem ratio when all 4 slots are filled.
Say, 245 fsb was fine with 2 sticks it just won't go that high now, This is at 1:1, I haven't played with other dividers.
Also GAT settings are less flexable when all 4 dimms are filled.
With just 2 slots I could run street racer, auto, auto, auto, auto whatever. 4 slots and I can't boot with anything tighter than Turbo, auto, auto etc.
When I put this box together I had limited $ and thought the 2x256 Mushkin pc3200 level 1"s would be more than sufficient.
If I had to do it over I would get 2 sticks of Mushkin 512.
Then I would have the benefit of a gig of ram but still have PAT enabled etc.
The difference without PAT and less aggressive GAT is minimal and benches, Sandra, 3dMark attest to that.
I've put all 4 in taken 2 out and now decided that a gig outweighs a better overclock or a few hundred points in benches.
That's my experience anyway.

I'm likely going to hold out for a 939 A64.

Well, like they always say, you can never have too much RAM. I'd like to go to 2GB myself, but then I'd have to buy a 1GB DIMM, and that's at least $500.

Are there boards with more than six slots? I know the dual G5s have eight slots, but I've never seen an x86 motherboard with more than six. Buying three (or four) pairs of 512meg modules is a wee bit cheaper than buying half the number of 1GB modules...

if you got the extra .5 gig fluant them.... i mean if you got it and don't have to pay for it.. i would say just toss it in.
