Ok so I just won a 60gb 1.8" harddrive for 12.50 on ebay and I'm wondering what I should do with it. First I was thiking maybe I could put it in a Palm Lifedrive, found out that wouldnt work though. So maybe I could get a broken zune to put it in?

I don't really need a MP3 player that much but can't think of anythign else to do with it so give me some ideas!

Carputer? Build a portable rig with that, a mini-itx, and a touchscreen? Add USB for thumbdrive?

Hi,

What brand/type is it? There are so many different interfaces around amongst the 1.8" disks that you can't tell where it could fit.

If it's a Hitachi with standard 44-pin ATA, you really won. If it's a Toshiba with 50-pin, you might find an external enclosure or an old iPod. Otherwise you will have a hard time finding a device or an appropriate adapter.

Like this?

Hi,

No, that one is for Slimline Optical drives, but also useful.

The older Toshiba drives have a connector that looks like PCMCIA, but has 50 pins instead of 68. But the pinout should be the same as for 2.5" harddisks: Pins 1-44 plus A-F for master/slave.

Im pretty sure it's an ipod replacement hdd. Im thinking maybe just find the smallest enclosure I can and use it for taking movies with me on vacatiosn for my newly aquire (also on ebay) powerbook.

Any recomendations for an enclosure? Firewire would be cool but usb is fine. Just want something small!

Hi,

I haven't ssen any iPod harddisk, but is there no label attached?

Toshiba drives have model numbers ending with GAL for 5mm height and GAH for 8mm height. If you get any enclosure or device, check whether it can take 8mm drives. If yours really is a 60GB, it's the 8mm model.
