A while back i dropped a machine and the core on the cpu cracked. a friend of mine had a dead notebook laying around and he let me have the cpu in it. i believe its an xp2100. its rated at 1.3 volts but the mobo voltage only runs at 1.5v. the machine has been running...and fast :D it does web browsing fine but get massive artifacts in any game. any ideas on how long i can expect this chip to last? the guy who gave me the cpu jokingly said itd last about a month.

Depends on how well you cool it... Is there any way to turn down the voltage in the BIOS? If you can cool the beast, I'm sure it'll be fine (enough till your next upgrade...). I'm sure it'll OC well at .2 extra volts!. PS my 3800 X2 is running at .175 over so...

naa I cant change the voltage in the bios. its a foxconn barebones machine with a sis chipset with very few features in the bios. its got a stock heatsink/fan. im really not interested in dropping much money on an aftermarket cooler, im just kinda crossing my fingers and hoping for the best.

if the chip burns out do you think it will damage the mobo? if it lasts 6 months or so as is i may put a sempron or better xp in it.

It typically does depend on the specific chip you're talking about, but in general I wouldn't worry a whole lot about running a CPU that's meant to run at 1.3v at 1.5v...not a ridiculously huge jump there. If your temps are fine I really wouldn't worry about anything burning out anytime soon...and even if the chip did (for some reason) go down, I doubt it'd have any effect on the mobo. I say "I doubt" for one main reason, I've seen it happen before...however, it's not something that would typically happen.

In short, you should be fine for now, but when you can I'd either drop in a CPU rated a little closer to 1.5v (if you don't plan on overclocking) or get a new/different mobo with the ability to drop your vcore into the 1.3v range.
