As for the hard drive, the reliability would have to be through the roof for me to consider it. The security of RAID 5 against hardware failure is very comforting.

QFT. There is sufficient vaporware, or stuff that takes significantly longer to the market thatn initially expected (MRAM anyone?)

Cold Fusion is not vaporware. They can create it... They just haven't quite been able to make the power output greater than the input.

And I DO have DNF on my desk... somewhere... My desk is very messy. I'll make you a copy as soon as I find it. ;)

i'd be impressed if they just got it to output AS MUCH power as is inputted.

Why wouldn't you be able to put this drive into a RAID 1 or RAID 5 array?

isnt it obvious he's comparing a 1 petabyte hard drive and a raid array totalling 1 petabyte?

Nope, it's not obvious at all. Is that your assumption?

A petabyte array would have pretty low uptime, and include some very complicated hardware and firmware. I don't think anyone has made a petabyte appliance (I'm talking about storage companies like EMC), so it's not like you just order the drives and a special cable.

If you bought the largest drives comercially available right now at 500 gigs, you'd need 2,000 drives to make a petabyte. In RAID 5, you'd need 2,001 such drives. In such a configuration, I can't imagine that you'd have such great performance, since you'd be stuck waiting for parity calculations and writing them to a single drive. Further, I can't imagine reliability would be very good since 2,001 drives would have a pretty good chance of failing often, be hard to power, and rely on lots of subsystems to even mount as a single volume. Something's always going to be down, or rebuilding -- perhaps so often that RAID 5 is excluded as a viable solution.

So, no: it's not obvious to me. Why did you assume this would be a good solution?
