1:1 audio???

If I play a sound source encoded at a specific frequency, what type of setup would I need to hear that source unaltered in its exact encoded frequency??? ...basically 1:1

I have an Audigy 2 (vanilla...not ZS) and I heard it converts every audio source to 48kHz. So for instance, if I am listening to a 44.1kHz sound file, the Audigy will convert it to 48kHz. This is not 1:1. I want to listen to audio the way it was intended.
 
The Audigy 2 isn't a bit perfect card, you'd need a card that doesn't resample, like the M-Audio Revolution
 
Kinda sucks that Creative is the standard. I do want the latest EAX and OpenAL since most newer/good games support it. Hopefully the X-Fi card will support 1:1 audio at least as a toggled option via the driver software.
 
The X-Fi does resample 44.1 to 48, but they claim that their resampling is so good that you won't be able to tell the difference, even after resampling multiple times at different frequencies. They claim that the imperfections introduced by resampling are much smaller than even what can be introduced by the best DACs.

The reason they resample to 48Khz is because they want the DSP/mixer/etc. to be able to process multiple sounds sourced at different sampling rates simultaneously. I don't think this is feasible without resampling everything to a common format.

With that in mind, they may support 44.1 sampling rate in a limited way (recording for example).
 
The X-Fi seems to take a shortcut by resampling to common frequencies rather than having a hardwired path for each major frequency. In particular, the loss of native 96khz/192khz processing really seems to castrate its ability to play high-rez sources.

Sure, their resampling algo's are probably pretty good, but I'm sure they said the same thing about their Audigy2 resamplers.

They do support a 44.1 path, but only in certain situations, and you have to manually set it.
 
This really kinda ticks me off...

Why do these companies have to force customers into using all these bells and whistles if they dont want to use them?

It reminds me of Creatives CMSS 3D or whatever its called. Took me forever to figure out that all my sound sources where being upmixed to surround sound because of this. And guess what? CMSS is ON by default. I hate that crap! lol

So tell me this...if I bypassed the card processing and went digitally into a home theater receiver, would that do 1:1 audio? I'm sure I would be sacrificing EAX though.
 
It's hard to tell, but if I had to guess, you'd lose all the fancy-pants 3d sound algorithms if you could disable any resampling, and frankly, I doubt that you could in the first place. I could be just thinking much too pessimistically, but I spose that there's a reasonable chance that their resampling algo is transparent and all that audio processing power will be put to great use and games will sound much much better.

However, I'd say the best bet for better sounding games would be having all sound effects recorded at 24/96 and compressed losslessly. That would BURY any gains you'd net from some super-fast computation engine to trace echoes.
 
Can't you do something about the audigy's sampling using Foobar2000 with kernal streaming and upsampling?
 
Yea, I myself use foobar to upsample everything to 48khz, but you still end up doing SRC..the only benefit is you get to use a better resampler first.
 
if you go through spdif to ur reciver does the signal still get resampled by the audigys and other sound cards that do the re sampling from 41.1k to 48k

Also, do home theater receivers play audio at 1:1? Or do they up sample as well?

Again, if the source is 44.1kHz, I want to have 44.1kHz coming out of my speakers. Same with 48kHz, 96kHz, 192kHz, etc.

Are there home theater receivers that do 24bit audio?

Its too bad these sound blaster cards couldnt process EAX signals, then send them digitally to a home theater receiver in their native frequency so the receiver could output the signal at 1:1. Or avoid this problem all together by eliminating all this upsampling in the card to begin with!
 
some people i have two sound cards the audigy and like a emu 0404 spidf out from audigy to digital in on the 0404 but i dont know if the signal is upsampled or not :/

I dont know about other cards, but the Audigy 2 only outputs SPDIF at 48kHz or 96kHz, so yes, it reamples anything sent to an external decoder.
