Hi, ive read the overclocking threads and stickies and all from other sites too but i must be doing something wrong, can anyone help?

I just got my new pc up and running today and installed all virus software and got internet working, now i am trying to overclock. specs:
opteron 146
asus a8n32
ocz pc4000

This is what i have done so far, i went into bios, didnt touch anything else except put memory to T1 instead of auto, and increased HTT by 1mhz incriments. my system refuses to post after 4 measly mhz! so instead of 2000hmz it only goes to 2020! what am i doing wrong? because i know opterons go to 2800.

ok i got a little further, i put it on T2, divider is at 166, only got it to 2250. the bios hangs at "initializing usb controlers"

i dont understand? but that will only give me a cpu of 1000mhz!? can you explain? my multiplier only goesw as low as 6 anyway. are u talking about the same thing.

No, it's not the same thing.

There's a CPU Multiplier, and an HTT Multiplier. CPU multi is obvious, HTT multi affects the clock for the HTT itself.

HTT clock should always be kept at ~1000mhz - no matter the CPU clock speed. If your HTT (FSB) is 300, and your HTT multi is still 5 - then 300x5 = 1500. Even dropping the HTT multi to x4 still leaves you at 1200 - which most (but not all) boards wouldn't like. So in that case, drop it to 3 to keep it under 1000mhz (300x3 = 900).

edit - this is all explained in VERY precise detail in the OC stickies in both the OC and AMD forums. If you go through that instead of trying to dive in head-first, you'll be better off for it. You need to go through and find your boards max HTT, then your memories max speed - and then the best blend of both. Trust me, from personal experience - trying to wing it is like trying to overclock while blind. It can't be done.

thanks for the reply, hope it helps me. this is what the sticky says
On a very basic level, all you are trying to do is to get the highest FSB x Multiplier formula that you can achieve. The easiest way to do this is to just raise the multiplier, but that will not work on most processors since the multiplier is locked. The next method is to simply raise the FSB. This is pretty self explanatory".
that would suggest you simply raise FSB. i wrote this thread on another forum and no1 could help me, this would suggest the sticky is a little complicated for most as no1 there could help me either and told me to run in T2 or check connections. no1 even mentioned multipliers until now. thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

there's a lot more to it that that actually, you really should do more research first.... I found Eclipse's guide http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=888001 extremely helpful when I started doing A64 oc.
Basically, you turn all your settings down first and raise each one separately until you hit a limit. This will let you find the limits of your HTT (FSB), CPU, and RAM individually. Then you'll need to find out what combination off your highest HTT, CPU, and RAM will give you the best performance. Strive to get the highest CPU clock with the best trade off of CPU voltage and temperature. Good luck

basically "FSB" no longer realy exists as it did before A64s. It used to be a main buss that the higher level devices used to communicate to each other. Since the memory controller is now phisically located IN the (754/939) cpus, that freed them up to use the HTT bus to talk to the north bridge.

The "clock" is not just a speed rating of a bus, it is an actual part that spits out pulses at a certain rate. You then "multiply" or "divide" that clock to derive a different speed. It does not matter what the original clock is, only what you are taking as a referance point. Normally (to us simple minded OCers ;) ) this reference point is the traditional FSB clock speed. Now even though the ram is realy the only thing that externally "touches" the clock speed of the FSB many clock speeds of parts of the mobo are taken relative to it... such as cpu and HTT speed. And relative means multipliers (or div). So not only does the cpu have a multiplier, but probably just about everything on the mobo has one, the mobo manufacturers only let you mess with ones you will need.

The reason there is low timing ram is so that it can be loosened a bit (increase timings), OCed and still have timings that won't hinder performance.

oh...and generally its better to have a higher oc'ed cpu with ur ram running a divider and tighter timings than having your cpu/ram running 1:1....generally give us some feedback on ur oc and we can tweak it for u

if you want ne help just pm me or anyone else here

Ha I always thought it was the oppositte. Well i'm an Intel guy so it might be different. I was always told that Intel's were very FSB\memory bandwidth bottlenecked so running a higher CPU clock speed with a divider would not net any gains because you are just making the choking point in the system worse.
:p
Oh well my compy can only oc from 2.8 to 3.4 stable right now, and the ram doesn't run well on a divider anyways. Cheers and good luck!

yeh intel are more bandwith based...so it would be more beneficial for a higher memory speed on intel but ive been told amd runs quicker with a faster cpu

thanks guys, see it wasnt so hard id already done my research, i got it to 2910mhz before it failed prime95 so just gonna run it at 2800 with stock voltage. i cant stress this enough though, in guides and stickies you REALLY need to mention more about the importance of LDT, there was like 1 line in the sticky and it simply said dont go over 1000 with no calculations as to how. this is possibly THE MOST important part, for me at least, as i knew what to do but no1 mentions LDT ever and all the different names it could go by and you cant even get off the ground without it, i was ready to take my my psu and everything. PLEASE do a section on LDT and not a brief comment. guides afterall are for the people who cant do it and are learning how, not people already in the know.
thanks for the offer on tweaking guys! ill let you know how i get on today, just got to get the memory in check. its OCZ platinum pc4000 3-3-2-8 so a 166 divider should be 233 or even better a 183 divider should be exactly 252. where should i start on trying to lower the timings? try 2-3-2-8 first or the last digit? i presume a 166 divider would be better because i might be able to lower timings?

ok im back :) ive managed finally to get 2.8ghz with pc4000 on a divider of 166 ocz 3-3-2-8. think you can improve it anyway? :). im not really interested in going for 3ghz if it means upping the voltage, id rather have a long lasting FX than a 1 year lasting super machine. my calculations i should be able to get a divider of 183 but bios doesnt boot, any ideas to tweak? get more from it without upping volts? any ideas very welcome :) thanks for help guys.

whats your voltage right now?...and some set ups dont like certain dividers like 183 :p but 166 is always safe

voltage right now is 2.8 for the ram as ocz likes that apparently. cant get it stable at 183divider no matter what but that should only run the ram at 255mhz. so just sometimes 183 is out of the question no matter what? cant think of any other way. should i try lowering timings? if so what should i start with? 2.5-3-2-8?
