Clamping down on bitcoin and gift cards over fear of terrorism? What ever happened to that other non-traceable currency used for terrorism called "cash?"

They will urge the European Commission, the EU executive arm, to propose measures to "strengthen controls of non-banking payment methods such as electronic/anonymous payments and virtual currencies and transfers of gold, precious metals, by pre-paid cards," draft conclusions of the meeting said.

The simple fact is that no one should be able to make a transaction without there being visibility and tracking for it so the exchange of funds has a trail that leads from one uniquely identifible person to the next and those records should be globally visible to governments and law enforcement agencies for taxation purposes and for investigation of various criminal acts. No matter what kind of exchange happens, people should have to pay their due for it instead of sneaking underhanded money movement under the table. Private sales of stuff currently are hard to identify since there's no tracking system. The movement of every product and every unit of currency, no matter how small, should be logged and available for reference. Bitcoin is an attempt to break that system solely for the gain of people who are up to no good or have irrational fear over being properly controlled. Those kinds of people should all get into a Bitcoin funded spaceship and shoot themselves at the Sun instead of complaining and fighting against an orderly society. Grats to the EU for being able to stand up and act intelligently. I only wish people on the other side of the Pond were that reasonable.

Cash still needs to be physically transported, and it's heavy. Although the EU issued their 500 euro note as a competitive advantage; that 500 euro note equals 35% of the paper notes currently in circulation. Take a guess who the primary users of that are. :/

Thing is, terror finance is low dollar for the most part. To really catch it, you basically have to dragnet everyone and sort through a monumental amount of noise. As someone who's main job is just this, I don't know it's worth the freedom/security tradeoff.

Anyone dumb enough to use Bitcoin because they think it's anonymous deserves to be caught.

There are coins out there that are better to anonymous transactions, i.e. Dash

But yes cash works best, unless they are marked bills.

You should rename yourself to CreepyBigBrother. I suppose you think all houses should have cameras and microphones fitted, which (to take your phrase) "should be globally visible to governments and law enforcement agencies for taxation purposes and for investigation of various criminal acts". After all, you just don't know what heinous criminal acts people are planning in their own homes and they should be monitored by the state at all times

If you think state control is such a great thing, why don't you move to North Korea? It would be your dream country.

I think his name should be more like CreepyUncleTroll.... He's our resident troll here in the Front Page News. Always going on about how government should have full control, etc...

I know this isn't soapbox but please tell me this is a troll post... Don't you believe in at least a modicum of privacy? Do you really need the government or any other entity knowing your shopping habits?

They were getting gift cards to "IED's & AK-47's R US"? :p

Perhaps terrorists need to eat and buy transit passes and wear clothes (naked terrorists get caught way quicker than terrorists who are dressed) ... and if they are like the 9-11 terrorists you have strip clubs and video games and such ... lots of incidental expenses for the jet setting terrorist

That's funny, because that's exactly what the Bitcoin Blockchain does.

There was something in the media about a 20 million dollar bitcoin wallet of ISIS that turned out to be a lie.

Cash dwarfs all.

All they can do is fuck up the payment rails even further than they already are, which only strengthens the case for bitcoin.

The state can not win this fight.

(the fight against the people, not against ISIS)

Am I the only one that understands he intentionally writes these to get everyone's panties in a bunch? I find them comical.

No he's a troll, and a damn good one. His posts are pure satire.

He is a troll, but I believe him to be genuinely ignorant on the topic as well. The only other explanation is a deliberate disinformation campaign. Nobody sentient being can consistently to be that wrong.

I've wasted far too much time with him and just ignore him now.

Gift cards are becoming some of the smugglers choice to physically smuggle money across borders. Also, I don't recall if they fixed the "loophole" yet, but gift cards also didn't have to be legally declared at customs/border crossings either, unlike cash, cashier's checks, etc.

Nah, I liked his/her previous personality (skribbel kat) way more than this one.

Time for a new one I think.

Ugh, you people. I leave you guys alone for like a few hours and you start with the reproductive organs thing again. Not selling so shoo back into your "work" folder.

As for you... Yes there should be cameras and microphones in peoples' homes, but I think people will try to disable them or get sneaky sly about it so the best we can do is keep an eye on them through their smartphones and by placing cameras and junk in as many public places as possible. We should also be watching what people buy, how much money they have, their bio stuff like pulse rate and junk and a bunch of other variables so we can prevent crimes when people start to look like they might be about to do something wrong. An arrest can totally be made ahead of time instead of us waiting until after someone does something stupid and there are bodies laying around. It's dumb not to be proactive if we can help it. Plus, it'd prolly be more acceptable for people to go into counseling and other mandatory intervention stuff than jail.

Nope! I'm making myself happy. If you wanna be a grump-face and not come along for the ride, that's totally your choice. *hands dgz some crayons and points at a corner* Go color something. :D

Agree with the new naming convention, this guy is a space cadet and should shoot himself into orbit. Living with these irrational insane thoughts in space would be proper punishment. Sickos like this are driving America into the ground. Even if it is a troll, spewing this trash means it can be seen and potentially given credence by someone else. Read some Terri Goodkind books and see how you feel about your globalist/socialist views.

As no doubt everyone here knows I'm extremely critical of the government.

He once told me that any atrocity committed by any government in the 20th century no longer counts. Because it's in the past. That's as recently as 15 years ago.

That'd be Terry Goodkind. :p And though authors are coolness (though I'm totally biased) -- I think its a good idea to gasp a little air, calm down, and realize how super-silly it is to base any worldview on someone's fantasy fiction. If you can't see the fault-y thinking in that, then there's probably no hope for you. :)

It just perfectly illustrates that all politicians are clueless gits which don't understand the world we live in.

I'm fairly certain that should read, "her posts".

Ahh. Well as far as I'm concerned, uncle = he. It's easier that way, and apparently I've.not read nearly enough of CUG posts to get the idea that there may be a "she" behind the curtain.

Uh huh, sure. You can't see the relation from the arc of his story to what's happening in the world now? Very prophetic to be perfectly honest, the have's are crushing the have not's, and you are perpetuating the case for them through your rhetoric. Your views are your own, but god help us if you are of voting age. Go live in Raqqa or Turkey and let me know how it goes.

Mmmmm, turkey. That sounds good. Can't wait until Thursday.

I think a lot of people in the first world would quickly cry and break down if they were in a third world country for more than a day.

I tend to finish reading what I start reading, and I'm more than a little sorry to say that I read the entire 14 book series by Terry Goodkind. The first few books seemed like he had something good going on ("People are stupid" and all that), but then it went downhill in a really bad way. I barely got past book 6 with the ridiculous statue storyline. At that point I kept reading out of a morbid sense of "how much worse can this get?" Someone apparently stepped in and edited him from time to time after that, as some of the following books managed to rise a bit above mediocrity, but in the end the series just sputtered into an uninteresting anti-climatic stop. I threw the set into the recycling dumpster.
