Copyright trolls are the worst of the worst. Even after being repeatedly smacked down by the courts, these scumbags are still up to their old tricks.

"The purpose of this step is to gather evidence about who used your Internet account to steal from our client. The list of possible suspects includes you, members of your household, your neighbors (if you maintain an open wi-fi connection) and anyone who might have visited your house. In the coming days we will contact these individuals to investigate whether they have any knowledge of the acts described in my client’s prior letter,” the letter reads.

I can see where this is going.

Neighbor's wife gets the notice, and suspects husband is looking at gay porn. Threatens divorce.

Thank you copyright trolls for fucking up someone's marriage.
 
And if they are in the wrong (DHCP yo), can't this be considered defamation of character? And IMO this is really just blatant blackmail.
 
ya but what are the chances someone who is 'stealing your internet' knows your MAC address and changes theirs to be the same to get away with it?
 
Isn't this going to backfire hard for Prenda? Didn't the judge in another case already threaten to turn them into janitors?

Our whole civil court system in this country needs to be reformed. There are so many frivolous lawsuits like this that amount to little more than blackmail.
 
It's time to hunt them down and crucify them. (Figuratively, of course.) I want to see these idiots disbarred and jailed for blackmail and racketeering. I want to see every single penny they every made and every single asset taken from them and handed to their victims as restitution and punitive damages. I want to see them live in rags from the time they get out of jail until the time the end their own pitiful little lives.
 
Go ahead, tell my neighbors. If they don't already assume I look at porn on the internet, they are naive on the same level as an infant. Then again I don't have any neighbors within wifi range of my consumer level router.

Problem for those asshats with it, is that they need only be wrong once, and sued for defamation once. The jury award would likely be a ridiculous one in a case like that. You get a dozen men on a jury, and it would be over for the patent trolls that tried it.

I'm pretty sure the kind of people using bittorrent to pirate porn probably dont care if people know they look at porn or not. It's not like their target is some savvy 40 yr old career man with a family to worry about. The shoe simply doesnt fit.

Lots of people. Like to look good for the neighbors, afraid of gossip, etc. Why do you think people bullying, blackmail is so effective? Though watching porn... probably isn't on the high part of the list to be embarrass about, these days.

Yup.

My USPS truck often delivers mail to the wrong house. One day I got some of my neighbor's mail including a box that had some pills from Las Vegas, and a magazine sent in a blacked out wrapper.

Being the gent that I am, delivered said neighbor's porn and boner pills when I knew he wasn't home.

Mine, when I don't weed my yard fast enough in the spring or to their liking. They can't complain to others who don't because they own their houses, I just rent.

Anyway, this isn't like blasting loud music and having constant parties. Hell, its not even like my neighbors behind me (also renters) who leave their back porch light on 24/7.

Every time they ask you to do something just look at them. Say nothing until they stop talking. Repeat until they stop asking.

At this point, Abuse of Process would also be on the list of crimes. The lawyers representing them could also receive some harsh punishments.
