The big question in the UK will soon be "would you like your internet service with or without porn sir?"

A coalition of U.K. Internet providers says its customers will have to choose whether to have access to pornography and other potentially unsavory websites, rather than just being given the option to block them.

huh? don't power users do this anyways? I mean, I block porn when my kids are staying with me, and I turn it back on the moment they leave.

why is the isp the one doing it in this instance?

Obviously everyone here in the UK is too stupid to set up any kind of parental controls so the ISP's have to do it for everyone to save the children.

Because the average person is computer illiterate and don't know anything about web filtering or content controls.

Take that comment one step backwards.

"Obviously everyone here in the UK is too stupid to know that any kind of parental controls exists so the ISP's have to do it for everyone to save the children."

True :(

I really wish there was a better system than complicating things for one group of people by making thing easier for another group but that seams to be the only way things work these days.

Normally it's the majority that has to suffer the complications due to the minority but i must admit at least when it's the majority causing the minority complications people find it easier to accept.

Windows 8 would do wonders with parents if there exist a notification at first boot that make parents aware of the existence of parental controls. You know, where you first boot your computer you're asked what user name and password you want and all that? And the few extra screens you go through from manufacturer software, like registration and so on? There needs to be one extra step - do you wish to set up parental controls?

I thank god daily that I do not live in the shithole that is the EU.

Im not sure many other places are better... Theres australia with its silly firewall, theres the US with all the goverment regulations where they can search your cavity and computer because they feel like it, the constitution doesn't apply to those in power :D Then theres areas of the world with much lower living standards... I suppose Japan/South Korea is still fine... You would have to learn the language if you don't already. :p

I suppose it's good you at least get a choice, though a corrupt government might use that against someone. Not that a corrupt government needs this.

As for parenting, my parents didn't restrict much of anything. My son I did the same. Did he ever see anything I wouldn't have approved of? Of course. Did it destroy his life and make him the scourge of society? Let me think... no.

The ISPs are doing it backwards, because stupid people don't want to be bothered to block the porn, but would jump at an opportunity to sue the ISP if their child sees it.

With this model, you have to call up your ISP and ask for the porn filter to be disabled.
"Hi, this is _______. Yes, I do want the porn. Thank you".

What?

Its still listed as a member state on every website I checked, did that change recently or something?

I think he's just very confused, possibly because the UK doesn't use the Euro and isn't in the Schengen Agreement (though I'd be surprised if he knew what that is). I'd definitely have noticed if we'd left the EU.

Back on topic, my mobile phone (cell) provider (Vodafone) already uses web blocking by default. It's very annoying, but it's not an embarassment to phone them to get it turned off, since their list of adult websites extends from porn and gambling to things like pub review websites.

Welcome to the country of Big Brother.

Glad the Government had time to look at the real issues worring the British people, High taxes, High unemployment no economic growth , what do we care about them.

Lets tell everyone if we want to look at porn.

I hate being infected with the porn contents. So as to me, I use the internet filter for Mac to provide me with a green and safe network environment.

I also don't see why people seem to be getting so hot under the collar about this, it just gives a lot of parents an easy option in the UK to control access without having to think.

Adults should take it upon themselves to decide and filter content for their kids. It seems the ISPs over there are making adult content opt in. They are making the decision for the parents.

Yeah it makes it easier for parents to keep the stuff away from their kids. Problem is that it makes it easier for parents to keep the stuff away from their kids.

Hey parents, how about you fucking parent and not rely on a bunch of suits to do it for you?

If you can't take it upon yourself to take care of your kids put them up for adoption or drop them off at the nearest fire department/police station/hospital.

Then again isn't this the same part of the world that banned knives that were capable of stabbing?

Internet - porn = end of world?

Just in time for 2012! The END IS NIGH!

Anywho, I'm totally lost..... if it's a forced choice of allow or disallow.... isn't that ....... exactly like saying you want us to block it for you or do you want to have it available, but you can block it yourself?

I mean,... Can't they just say, don't block it, then set up their own filters?

Reading the article it seems like several ISPs will be blocking adult content by default forcing mature, consenting, adults to call into their ISP and asking them to turn off the filter. It should be the other way around.

Am i the only one thinking this as a future of paid extra services? 20 without porn, 24,75 porn sites access included. Like tv.

I suppose Japan/South Korea is still fine... You would have to learn the language if you don't already. :p

And deal with MASSIVE xenophobia, plus they do have some weird porn laws of their own (as you know in japan you can expect your porn to be pixelated everywhere).

The grass will always seem greener tho.
