Hi there. Can anyone tell me if ES Chips work on the EVGA SR2. Currently i have tried X5570 and E5506ES chips but both times i get the pc to boot but it gets stuck in the boot sequence at NVRAM check and then code 04 is displayed

Thanks for any help in advance

Have posted elsewhere on the forums but was told to come here for help

You will need a custom bios with the microcodes to support those chips, and one CPU that is supported so you can flash the bios. If you have a chip, I am sure I have a custom bios around here somewhere for you.

Thanks musky for the feedback. Wow i would appreciate it if you can assist me with that BIOS. So not even the new A53 BIOS would work without changing the microcodes?

I doubt it. The hang on "Checking NVRAM" thing is what i saw with some old E5530 B0 ES chips. Once I was able to update to a custom bios, everything worked fine. It does not surprise me that the newer bioses do not add additional support for older chips.

I may need to make up a custom bios from a newer version for you, or you can check with LOCOLAPTOP for one of the ones he made a while back. I think all I have are A47 versions with updated microcodes, which should work for you.

Musky is one of the SR-2 masters here (if not THE SR-2 master).

Looks like he has you taken care of.

What are you using the SR-2 for? Ever hear of folding?

The vid on that page does a very good job.

The short of it:
What does Folding@Home do? Folding@Home is a distributed
computing project which studies protein folding, misfolding,
aggregation, and related diseases. We use novel computational
methods and large scale distributed computing, to simulate timescales
thousands to millions of times longer than previously achieved. This
has allowed us to simulate folding for the first time, and to now direct
our approach to examine folding related disease.

Bring this up from the dead :) I have an sr-2 with the hang on nvram error with a set of B0 x5570's so I could use some help.

Do you have a chip it can boot with? It is a microcode issue. I can probably mod a bios for you, but you will have to be able to boot to an OS to flash it.

will an es l5640 work for flashing the bios? Also wow 4 meg for the rom file seems huge.

It should. I didn't modify a bios for anything over A47, and we had a bunch of SR-2s running L5640s on A49/A50 around here.

Download the default A54 from evga. It is the same size unzipped. I just didn't zip up the modded one.

Edit: Just double-checked - A47, A49, and A54 (the ones I happened to have) are all 4096 KB. firedfly confirmed this as well.

Its because the empty space in the bios is filled with 0's which take the space as place holders.

Ok well programmed the bios and it detects my x5570. I must say I like being able to independently disable each cpu with a x5570 in one socket and l5640 in the other. One problem still persists is that the bios keeps giving me bad checksum error and obviously it does not recall my settings. Did I do something wrong should I have done some command line switches when I flashed the bios? Thanks

I never used command line switches when flashing the bios on the sr-2.

It sounds like the CMOS battery on the motherboard may be bad. At least that's been the issue on other motherboards when I've seen similar errors.

thats what I would normally think maybe just a coincidence that it started it right after the flash and fine right before

Never heard of that one. One thing you could do is try an earlier version bios. I just uploaded a modded A47 version. WARNING: Chrome and FF are going to gripe about this being an attack page. I am in the process of fixing it. There is nothing that will "attack" you here.

a49 same thing so I used afudos to delete the checksum and all is good now loaded win 7 64 with no problems time to try some folding then overclocking

I have SR2 and dual xeon X5570 ES, Currently i have tried it with A50 and A56 BIOS from EVGA but both times i get the pc to boot but it gets stuck in the boot sequence at NVRAM check and then code 04 is displayed.

Can you mod A50 and A54 for me? A56 from EVGA can not detect my CPU frequency.

Thanks for any help in advance.

Who was it that was modding the BIOS for us?

Hello. I have the same problem with a pair of 5570 QGXR, and fail to download a modified BIOS versions, posted here. Can you Give me a link, please, where I can get out bios.rom changed? Please very much, help me, that I despair myself. Thank you very much.

Look at the post above yours. Can't you download on of them?

Indeed, I am

I can not. That's why I also wrote here. otherwise I was not so desperate

I understand from newbs's post, that 1W555A49.zip , it would go. If there is not too much trouble, you can put it on my mail? I give you my email on PM.

Right-click - Save Link As - then pick a path. Clicking on them tries to open them, which is not helpful.

Damn what a fool I am. it went as you said.
Thank you. I keep you informed about progress

No worries.

Stick around and we can help.

I notice that you are new here.

Once you get things up and running, we can help you optimize your boxen. And then you can start folding! Folding with help find cures for diseases.

Wow. I love you man. Went in first attempt with 54. I've already booted into macosx 10.6.8 with 16 beautiful threads. Now comes the fun (after I successfully managed to fix my ninja cooler. which is not a job too easy), OC

.

Yes, I finally arrived here after two weeks of searching. to solve these ESs
BTW, I have an intel s5520sc that not even boot with these CPUs
Is there any chance with this?

possibly, if somebody can mod the BIOS.

Is it an AMI bios? Do you have a link to the official bios? If it is AMI, I should be able to mod it.
