Good news. Got the CPU in the mail today and it seems to be everything the L5640 is without being an engineering sample. It looks exactly like the picture. Here's the CPUID screenshot (note it's OCed but this is because I didn't want to erase my settings, it's stock clock is 2.13ghz)

This was done on an ASrock Extreme:

and a P6X58D Premium

Both are with the latest BIOS as you can see. This is a sweet little processor I just ordered a second one ;D.

So far this looks to be a great processor for single socket boards. Unfortunately I don't have an SR2 to play with but now that we know it's the real deal I'm sure someone who does will. Of course being a Xeon it'll support dual socket boards.

Currently I have it at 3.5ghz @ 1.22 V, runs about ~68 C average on the cores.

Where did you get the second one? The original link says the deal is dead.

It is a more than i paid for my L5640's, but it is definitely the cheapest (at least currently) route to Dual Hex Core.

Hmmmm.......

Wife would KICK MY BUTT if I bought two more. Need that secondary contract to come in so I can pull the trigger...

if you make another SR-2....you can trim down your Main Rig and other folding for power savings, so you save money in the long run...

I would be selling (giving away) my Q6600 and the two 9800GX2's remaining in my garden. I would also kill SMP on all of the laptops currently running.

I'm currently only running 2X GPU2's in the sig rig as 3x GPU2's kept crashing and I know my OC's on the GTX285's are rock solid stable on anything but the latest round of GPU2 WUs.

18x multiplier under load, so exactly like the L5640s. I would love to get a feel for max overclocks and power usage. These also should be 60W processors instead of 80W like the ES L5640s are, for whtever that is worth.

Thanks for the info osrk!

I'm so tempted to pull the trigger and get one to go with my L5640 and then go SR-2.

It should be no problem mixing both in the SR-2. Dooo eit!!

I don't think that will work, since you should be limited to the 16x base multiplier on the 5639 and the 1X turbo on the 5640, leaving you with a 17x max. I may be wrong though.

I'm not so sure. While I would bet money it would work, I think there is a very real possibility you might loose some overclocking ability or the ability to disable numa.

That's based on my experience mixing CPUs in my SR2, anyway.

There are plenty of people on here who would buy an L5640 from you. Myself being one of them.

17x max would limit what I could get since it appears 200+ blck is problematic on the SR-2. Running the L5640 on my single cpu board gets me 3.8ghz. Maybe I'll get one and just get another single cpu board.

right I suspect you're heading down the right track. It's also possible both CPUs would be locked at their non-turbo multipliers, which would mean one at 17x and one at 16x.

nah, sell the L5640 to me! :)

if that means your giving away 9800GX2's i've got a home :D

osrk,
You stated in the kill it with fire thread that you did not purchase the CPU through the ebay store.
You also said that you got a 90 day warranty.
Can I ask where you ordered it from?

I also found a make an offer page here.

I made offers through their AIM chat and eventually finalized it and payed for it over the phone, I can give you the contact information of the guy I worked with. I remember 90 days but I never got it in writing so it would be hard to prove, at this point though if the CPU works out the box it seems unlikely that it'll die (*knock on wood!!!!*). On the ebay site they offer a 7 day warranty.

What about HT? Can you confirm it does indeed have HT on that chip, please?

Please do -- and what price were you able to bring them down to, if I may ask?

I bit on one. Going to put it in an ASUS Sabertooth MB.

Now I'm in the tri-hex club!!

I'm in for three. One to upgrade an i7-920 DO in an ASUS P6X58D Premium.
Now what to do with the other two... ;)

the difference is these are just rebranded oem chips. most likely the exact same 5640's.

L5640 - 17x base multiplier + 2x turbo
L5640 ES - 17x base multiplier + 1x turbo
L5639 - 16x base multiplier + 2x turbo

So a real L5640 has a 19x max multiplier and these only have a 18x. The ES versions of the L5640 that many of us have only have an 18x max multiplier as well.

My nephew needs a new rig. He games and this would be good for him. I gave one away for one of the early giveaways. I'll probably do the same with the remaining one.

It is a shame that my budget is spent for the remainder of the year. Not that I'm upset, going from Q6600 to 2x 5530's is quite the upgrade.

stable overclock reached, 3.52 ghz at 1.25 V temperatures (cpu is under half load) are awesome. This chip could easily do more i'm just hesitant about upping the voltage any more. Thoughts?

You can safely go up to a Vcore of 1.4V. You have plenty of headroom left.

Any further updates? Would obviously rather spend $1000 for a pair of these vs $2000+ for a pair of X5650's.

VID is still a safe long term operating voltage though and 1.35 should be high enough for quite a bit more overclocking.

I have one due for delivery any time now. As soon as I get it up and running I'll let you know how it clocks.

haha well it's pretty stable it's been up crunching for about 4 days straight now. What else do you want to know?

My second one is coming tomorrow :D

I can't remember, do you have an SR-2? My curiousity lies around these in a Dual CPU configuration.
