I'm Going To Kill Myself - Massive Scratch On New 30"

Dell 3008WFP, a harddrive fell onto the screen leaving a deep, 3" scratch. I've read about using an eraser, Vaseline, etc.. Is there a company that can repair, or replace screens?

I'm going to go cry now.
 
Ouch! Now you have to spend more money on something that's pricey in the first place.

I've been there.
 
maybe time to consider smaller three panel eyefinity setup, thatway if one dies or gets maimed your not completely screwed.
 
Eh... There are ways that you might be able to buff it out, but it a;; depends on what type of antiglare coating the monitor uses.
 
Don't bother. Rubbing all manners of weird chemicals/creams will probably haze up the affected area and make it worse.
 
Picture of the screen with the display on? How deep is the scratch? Just the anti-glare coating or did it get into the panel itself?
 
What a terrible accident. You MAY be able to remove the matte padding completely somehow...
 
I had a horrible day and basicly a giant fight with a former friend needless to say I was so pissed off I picked up small ball that I use to play with the dog with and just threw it out of anger .. next thing I know I look at my 24 inch LG panel (the nice one with a PVA panel) and there is a giant crack in the LCD panel and half the screen is just a garbled mess .. I just broke down right there and screamed ...

Not a good day lol , ended up replacing it with a nicer monitor but anytime I get really angry I walk OUT of my room.

The pixels behind the scratch appear to be fine, I think it just went through the clear coating, or whatever it's called. I'll post a pic tomorrow.
 
Boogalou, so sorry this happened to you! It sucks. But now you have to make the best of it.

If the 3008WFP had a glossy panel, it would be well within possibility to fill in the scratch making it effectively invisible. But it's not glossy — it's matte, which makes this much trickier.

The possibility of doing anything to erase that scratch depends on how deep it penetrated. Do you think it reached the polarizer, or did it only scratch away the anti-glare coating?

If you don't mind converting your whole screen to glossiness you could go down the same road I'm treading... you have four options:
  • Removing the anti-glare coating (risky, and would leave the polarizer vulnerable)
  • Polishing away the AG coating (permanent, and probably warranty-voiding)
  • Covering the whole panel with ultra-wide Scotch Packaging Tape or something similar (I'm not aware of anybody ever doing this successfully, without bubbles)
  • Covering the whole panel with a sturdy plastic film with liquid in-between (routinely done with tiny screens)
Since the scratch may have already voided your warranty, you may want to try polishing. PEEK polish and Mothers Mag & Aluminum Polish have both been used successfully (though, to my knowledge, not on any 30" LCDs).

If I were you I'd just get an RMA from Dell and hope that they're ether generous (repairing it on warranty, despite the scratch) or at least don't charge too much for the repair and don't take too long to do it. I've not had any experience with Dell in this matter; I don't know how generous and how quick they are.

After spending hours reading Metagenies link to removing the anti-glare, I decided to use a half rubbing alcohol/half water solution first. I very lightly rubbed it in over the spot with a microfiber towel.

Amazingly, it looked like the scratch actually melted away. I immediately cleaned the solution off, and then applied eyeglass cleaner to the entire screen.

I can't find where the scratch was. I don't know if the anti-glare coating on this monitor is just super soft or what, but I literally, even when looking with a flashlight I can't find it. Absolutely stunned.

Maybe you didn't scratch the LCD after all, but instead the LCD scratched material off from the corner of the hard drive — maybe the anti-glare coating is actually super-hard! Maybe by cleaning it, you got rid of hard-drive-corner powder.

Just to get this clear — all you did was clean the screen, right? First with rubbing alcohol, then with eyeglass cleaner? You wiped off the eyeglass cleaner, correct?

Sorry for late reply.

It was definitely scratched, I could place the tip of my fingernail into it. The hd was also clean. Now with the screen off and using a flashlight, the scratch is 100% gone.

And yup, just used rubbing alcohol. I read somewhere that it can melt the anti-glare coating on some monitors, thus getting rid of scratches. Didn't think it would work.

Wow, looks like you got the scratch removed, that would have ruined my day to have that expensive of a monitor get a massive scratch on it, I'm going to have to keep this in mind for the future.
