Agree on moving to an outboard soundcard. Additionally, get the fuck away from the RCA jacks: they're unbalanced, and can be a significant noise source in and of themselves. Get a soundcard with balanced TSR or XLR outputs and you'll likely be much better off.
That said, the KRK's don't...
Assuming you're serious about treating your room properly (which will make a HUGE difference!), I'd go with the Adams. Stay the fuck away from the Samsons & Behringer's, and I'd generally stray away from the M-Audios, although they're not terrible. If you can, take a listen to any/all of them...
The best settings for anything sound-related are the highest sampling/bit rate your sound card/computer can produce, with no extra effects of any sort!
In general, you should take the "frequency response" graphs & stats posted by the manufacturers with a grain of salt. A flat frequency response is important, but there is a lot more to what makes a good/bad set of headphones.
The MDR-V6's/7506's are great cans to get you into "real"...
M-Audio does a lot of things right, but in general speakers aren't one of 'em, at least as far as recording/mixing goes. I'd take the RP5's any day, no question.
Haven't used a Windows box for a little while, but iTunes runs pretty much flawlessly on OS X. As for updates, personally I'd rather all programs were updated as frequently and easily. Bug fixes & compatibility updates = A Good Thing (tm)
Basically, 99% of the consumer cards out there, especially the onboard ones, are NOT made to handle audio in anything resembling a professional manner. If you plan on doing anything that sounds any good, an entry-level "pro" card will set you back around $100-150, and will beat the living shit...
Hey guys, sorry 'bout the late response (been busy with work n' stuff!). The laptop is a Toshiba A105-S4011.
We went with upgrading the ram from 512 to 2GB for a grand total of $40 (gotta love them ever-droppin' memory prices!). After that, if she still needs more speed, we were debating a...
My girl's got an older mid-range laptop w/ a Core Solo T1300 in it, and she's looking to get some more life out of the machine. I've already got her upgrading to 1-2 gig vs. 512, and up to a 7200RPM hard drive, but I'm not sure if the Core Duo T2300 is compatible with the T1300.
Assuming the...
Being a PC gamer recreationally (SP?) and Apple user professionally, I can with certainly say I am neither a PC or Mac "zealot". That said, I remember an article somewhere mentioning that Apple had one of their servers up with no firewall or antivirus or anything, and challenged any hacker to...
Slow news day? I'd say it's a conversation people *should* be having one a regular basis anyway, just to keep mac/'nix users vigilant. imho I suppose...
Agreed, which supports my argument that the thing's out too early. In 2-3 years, we'll have way faster 1.8" drives (and/or cheaper solid state drives), hopefully much better battery life, and hopefully something along the lines of a sort of "wireless firewire" (excuse the humorous oxymoron :p)...
I can't find the link, but somebody posted something about nanowires and increasing the battery capacity of Lithium-Ion batteries 10x! I'll look for the link...
edit: found something related: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/12/071219103105.htm
Exactly! I can only assume newer revisions of the "Air" line will include firewire ports (4-pin?) at least. As hard drives begin to phase out and solid state disks phase in, (similar to what the iPod line is doing) the "Air" line will inevitably have only the solid state disk option. I'm sure...
Fair enough. I'm impressed by the fact that they crammed as much sh*t in there as they did, and I can guarantee you they're working on a version with more ports and an optical drive. Give hard drive technology another year or two and we'll no doubt see either faster 1.8" drives, or much...
Agreed. The lack of a firewire port, thus eliminating the possibility of using it for nearly any creative endeavor, really surprised me. A mini-dock w/ firewire ports, 2-4x USB ports, an ethernet port, etc. would've been all it took to sell this thing for me and I think a lot of other people...
A: it's a 3lb notebook, not 2lb
B: 4x the memory, 10+ x the processor power (very rough estimate), 4x the hard drive space, 2.5" more screen real estate, a higher-res screen, a multi-touch pad, faster wifi, and OSX (which includes a lot of good, free software) isn't enough for ya?
I figured as much: I thought the gamecube used USB, but I've never had one so I wouldn't know! The point is you don't get a wii to use your gamecube controller on, and you don't get a MacBook Air to plug shit into it.
10 asshole points to you though! My point was in dire need of...
The idea of getting this particular laptop is for the wireless capabilities: why intentionally add something like that? If you're wired, get a wired laptop (like the MacBook or your MacBook Pro in your sig).
It's like complaining the wii doesn't have any wired ports for legacy controllers (I...
Umm, I doubt it. There's nowhere to plug one into (like an expresscard slot for instance), and if you look at the motherboard, I'd bet you won't see any chips with firewire support built in.
Oh come on now, we both know there are more than a couple options for multiplying/splitting usb ports...
Fair enough. Out of curiosity (and entirely unrelated to the current topic) what sort of music do you do? Are you recording other bands/people?
Yep. Don't forget on airplanes/in airports too!
That's what I'm saying: I'd bet less than 1% of the people on these forums would be anywhere on the radar as part of Apple's "Target Audience" for this thing.
Ding! Think real estate agents & business-types who'd most likely just replace the thing when the battery stopped holding a charge anyway. $1700 is nothing to some people, ESPECIALLY when they're buying STYLE!
*note: I'm definitely not one of those people :p
Erm... I wouldn't go so far as to say the MacBook is "total overkill" for Pro Tools. For location work and/or personal little demo stuff sure, but throw a full 32-track song with plugins and you'll start to really wish you had a higher-end laptop (like my MacBook pro).
I do, however...
For the gamer community, yes, but that's never really been their target has it? Comparatively, I'd imagine it's much more lucrative to market towards the billions of non-PC-gamers out there, than the small percentage of PC gamers that would want to buy a mac in the first place. It'd be fun...
Anyone wanna give me a brief geek synopsis on the current state of:
Video Cards
Motherboards/Chipsets
Processors
? Last I really paid attention, Core 2 Duo's were the best thing out there, and quad-core processors were just coming out. Video cards: I have no idea after the...
Methinks that's the root of the issue, my man! Although I'm not 100% sure of how said adapters work, I do know that it's pretty likely that those two are highly related.
Let me start off by saying I've been building/upgrading/fixing/customizing/gaming on PC's for upwards of 11 years. I'm very much a PC expert (repaired professionally for a couple years, ran IT at a clinic, etc.).
That said, fuck windows, OSX and Apple kick their asses all over the place...
