That looks like one ghetto ass rigged CPU fan. I like it!

    Server 2012 on M1015 Won't Boot

It's even more strange now. I pulled out all of the drives and put them back in one by one. I get 5 drives in and showing up in Windows just fine. I slide drive 6 in and boot up. Well now drive 6 has replaced drive 2.

    Server 2012 on M1015 Won't Boot

What the hell!? I did a clean install of server 2012 to resolve some issues related to a third party driver I had installed. That's all fine now. However as I've been adding my drives one by one so I can label their position in the case properly, I get to 6 drives just fine. After that shit...

    Server 2012 on M1015 Won't Boot

ND, I want the drives to spin down when not in use as it is mostly for serving up media. So I don't want any striped RAID. For special data, i'll either use duplication or snapraid. Thanks for the suggestion though.

    Server 2012 on M1015 Won't Boot

ND40oz: Most likely oging with DrivePool Biznatch: ok. I'll try a clean install tonight. Do you by any chance have a motherboard with UEFI?

    Server 2012 on M1015 Won't Boot

Looks like Server 2012 is acting up already. I'm working on renaming, reformating, reorganizing my drives one at a time. However SErver 2012 is showing multiple drives in "My Computer" with question marks on them. It shows a total of 6 drives but there's only 2 drives in the server. Then under...

    Server 2012 on M1015 Won't Boot

ManofGod: M1015 is a SAS controller commonly used in large storage servers. Check out the storage section on here and you'll find plenty of talk about them. ND40oz: I tried to, but I think I was doing something wrong. I gave up and flashed over to IT mode before giving it much effort. IT mode...

    Server 2012 on M1015 Won't Boot

Really? Anything in particular? On another note, I just fixed the issue I was having. I had to flash the M1015 to IT mode and reinstall Server 2012. Now it's booting up fine. Still working through all the first time wizards. Other than the issues with Storage Spaces, I'm interested to hear...

    Server 2012 on M1015 Won't Boot

I'm trying to do an install of Server 2012 Essentials. The OS drive is connected to an M1015 on a X9SCM-ii board. I couldn't get it to boot so I tried disabling the M1015 BIOS so it was just straight to the OS. During the setup when choosing the drive, it has a warning that the drive is not...

How to organize my data on several drives

Yeah, but you pay the price of then having to use Windows 8. :) As he said, does it NEED to look like a single drive? If you are using XBMC to view your media, then you can add multiple source locations to a single folder. For example, my "Movies" section consists of multiple SMB shares...

Supermicro X9SCM-F and VMWare thread info

Do any of you have the 2nd rev of this board, the X9SCM-IIF? If so, what would be the equivalent BIOS setting for "PCI ROM Priority" would be? Doesn't look like it is an option on this board, but it has the same issue where loading ESXi 5U1 takes forever loading megaraid_sas module.

    Storage Server Refresh...Suggestions?

Using mkfs.ext4 was what I meant by creating them. I should have worded that differently to differentiate between creating them in fdisk. Regardless, even though I initially labelled them with mkfs.ext4 I still did not have by-label or by-partlabel as an option under /dev/disk. They weren't just...

    Storage Server Refresh...Suggestions?

JoeComp: BTW, for some reason when you label your ext4 partitions when you create them they don't generate the links for /dev/disks/by-label. However, if you later use e2label to change or re-label them it will generate them. So now I have the option for listing out /dev/disks/by-label.

    Supermicro X9SCM-IIF

For those of you with this board, does anyone know what the equivalent BIOS setting for "PCI ROM Priority" would be? Running ESXi 5U1 takes a long time at "Loading module megaraid_sas" and the answer in the past seems to be simply changing that BIOS option to EFI Compatible, but I can't seem...

That fan and the VHS screws work like a charm! Thanks for the idea. I'm not missing a fan header directly on the expander that this could plug into, am I? Because right now it is just taking up one of fan headers on my mobo.

    Storage Server Refresh...Suggestions?

Correct. It doesn't list the drives out individually on any of the boot up screens. Though I imagine it would list them just fine in the webbios. Also note that my M1015 is NOT in IT mode. It's back to stock, working, and I'm done screwing with it before I brick it.

I believe they're Chenbro, but don't remember model offhand. It's on the Backblaze/Protocase websites. I bought mine from Protocase. They had already sourced a bunch of them for people buying those cases.

houkouonchi: Where did you get that price? I picked mine up, chassis only, for about $750 before shipping. Then added on some backplanes, mounting hardware etc, for another ~200-250 total. But yes, either way it is still pricey. JoeComp: I originally filled the first three rows and the M1015...

    Storage Server Refresh...Suggestions?

Well the good news is that I overlooked the sbrm1015.bin file included. I flashed that and the LSI rom back and we're back in business. The bad news is that it looks like the 8 drives thing earlier was not what odditory was thinking. Looks like one of the backplanes is dead on this brand new...

Well crap. I think I killed my M1015 already.... :( I was having an issue earlier with not all my drives showing up in linux (before odditory's explanation) so I tried flashing it back to IT mode from in this new board (previous failed attempt was in a different mobo). Well it failed this...

Thanks cantalup. I am still on the original firmware. Or at least whatever mode the lsi rom mentioned over at the servethehome site refers to at the end of his flashing guide. Because I could never get it to flash to IT and had to revert back to that rom. odditory: I've been thinking more and...

JoeComp: thanks. I was actually able to get into it finally later. It was just a bit tricky. Just curious, of those that are running your m1015 with Linux, what distro are you running and what kernel module are you using for it? The latest Ubuntu server keeps wanting to load megaraid_sas and I...

    Supermicro X9SCM-IIF

So when you're under the System Summary page of the IPMI on this board, does the "Firmware Version" refer to the version of IPMI or the BIOS version of the board? EDIT: It is the IPMI firmware version. I was finally able to get into the BIOS and confirm it is version 2.0.

That's pretty genius. I just ordered one! Now I have two hiccups so far. First, the board won't let me into the freaking BIOS setup no matter how many times I press DEL as stated on the splash screen. Even tried two different keyboards. The second issue is that I have three rows of drives...

Alright, got the initial wire up for this done. Just about to boot it up for the first time, but figured I would post some updated pics. Here's a pic of the initial cabling. Once I know the thing runs fine I'll go back and clean it up a little more. And here's a shot of it from the back...

How's this for some redneck ingenuity!? Now you smarter people let me know if this is gonna work or if it's gonna blow me up. Thanks. I'd be interested to see how you did it. I'd also be very interested to hear Mike's response! I'm pretty sure my old 4020 was just as stupid and painful. So either I'm missing something, someone is screwing with me, or they must have some retard designing their cases. Someone with a 4224, please post pics of how you wired up your backplanes. Especially if you are using the 120mm fan wall. See mine below. WTF!? Notice that the wall isn't even...

It's on an asrock x58 extreme mobo. I don't think that has the EFI BIOS. If it won't provide any benefit to flash it for use with linux then I'll just try to flash back the old firmware.

hmmm.... I get an error when flashing to IT and haven't found anything so far about it. Says that the firmware image doesn't support target adapter device id (0x72). Says it only supports 0x80. Is there another set of files somewhere?

Got most of my parts in, time to start playing. Which btw, I found a real nice deal on the expander from CDW Outlet. I wish I had thought to take a picture of the packaging when I took it out. It was that ridiculous. The card still had SAS cables hooked to it and it was all just wrapped up...
