Spending all that cash, why not get the radeon xt, doesn't seem like it will break the bank. Or just wait for the 420's to come out. Everything else sounds reeeeaaaaal nice. Sennheiser headphones are da b0mb.......
I started in 98 w/ an ati rage 8 mb, man my macheen ruled episode 1 racer and halflife at 640x480 and early cs betas, then came the diamond viper tnt2 32 mb, never looked back at ati until........see below, lol.
I had a similar prob w/ an older board and thought it was my memory,but it turned out to be my dimm slots, try your mushkin in someone else's compy? The older dimm works, right? That sounds frustrating, I basically ended up replacing everything (which is not so bad, sometimes)
I have had bad experiences w/ cheaper cards (lower quality), the extra money seems to pay off, powercolor and chaintech and others really blow, I'd pay an extra 20-40 bux for peace of mind......
Let's face it, computers are not a good investment, I go w/ athlon because of price and oc'ing ability. How long does he intend to use this config before he ups it again?
I noticed a big difference between 512 and 768, then I got 1 gb, and didn't notice a huge difference between that and 768, but if your budget allows, go for it : )
I think you should be able to get away w/ 2x aa and 8x af w/ your setup for a noticeable difference. It doesn't hurt to just mess w/ it and see what is best, sometimes on shooters (esp. on lan) I like to turn that stuff off for max fps.....;)
I think that is reasonable, he's getting a deal, depending on what he will be using the machine for......let's face it, compies are a bad investment (monetarily speaking, of course)
