You seem to trying to have some kind of flame war with me, but I'm not willing to flame back.
Prior to the release of the M505 and M675 laptops, Gateway bought all of their laptops from Quanta. Gateway continues to buy their older models from them. I also am not a fan of these older model...
Wistron makes the X- series ThinkPads now, they have not always done so. I agree that they do not make the T- series of ThinkPads and never have (to the best of my knowledge). The other ThinkPads that Wistron makes are some of the R- series. If you get a ThinkPad that was made in the...
If you recall, I did a lot of research on your behalf in this thread, trying to determine if Arima is the manufacturer of the Emachines 6805. My conclusion was that Arima is probably not the ODM. For your sake, I hope that Arima did not manufacture your laptop. Arima has probably the worst...
I agree that IBM ThinkPads are the best choice for durability and reliability if money is no object.
Coincidently, who do you think makes the X- series of ThinkPads for IBM? If you guessed Wistron, who also makes the Gateway M505, then you guessed right.
Nice screen - even
Battery life - Gateway M505
Good tech support - Gateway (see Consumer Reports ratings)
Good build quality - Gateway M505 (made by Wistron who is the biggest subcontractor making ThinkPads for IBM)
Quiet - Gateway M505 (uses mobile instead of desktop CPU which draws less...
I have never said that the Gateway M505 is the "be-all-end-all" laptop, only that it is a good value with some clear advantages over the Emachines 6805. These advantages include:
- Lighter weight (6.7 lbs vs. 7.5 lbs)
- Longer battery life (4.5 hrs vs. 2.5 hrs)
- Quieter operation (M505...
The fan on the Gateway M505X does not come on at all during normal use, even while resting on your lap. The hard drive is virtually inaudible and the keyboard is very quiet as well.
I recommend the Gateway M505X. It can be purchased from Gateway for $1499 less a 10% AAA discount = $1349 or from Office Depot this week for $1599 - $200 mail in rebate = $1399.
To see how games look when run on a widescreen notebook, see this thread by AlkalineX.
For more information on the same subject, see the Widescreen Gaming Forum.
The best sound system I have heard on a notebook is on the Gateway M505. You can also buy a Gateway M505X for $1349 this week. See my post in this thread.
The IBM T20 is a solid notebook. However, it is not known for good sound or game playing ability. I would stay away from all Dell...
I like both of these laptops and have recommended both to people depending on their requirements. I like the keyboard feel better on the X1000/zt3000. For some purposes, the available WSXGA+ screen on the X1000/zt3000 can also be an advantage. In terms of build quality and reliability, I'd...
See the Sager forums that I linked to in my previous post. You will get so much information that you will think you are drinking from a fire hose. To answer your specific question, PC Torque is one of the best resellers out there in terms of customer support. Are Clevo laptops good? Yes, if...
Yep, all of these laptops are made by Clevo and resold by a large number of vendors. If you want to see an even better price on these models from an excellent reseller, check out PC Torque. To get every kind of information and reviews on Clevo laptops, see the Sager Forums.
Edit: It seems...
I am beginning to think that the Emachines laptop is not made by Arima. The Arima W720 looks nothing like the Emachines 6805. To see a picture of the W720, go to this page, click on "Notebook", then look at the bottom of the resulting page.
I have been unable, however, to find out who...
I faced the same decision you did not long ago. I decided to go with a Gateway M505 for the reasons I describe here. It is a very solid, well built laptop with very good gaming performance, very good battery life and very good sound. You could go down to Office Depot and take one home this...
I still don't know what the Emachines laptop is, but I can tell you what it is not. It is not the Arima A520, the Athlon 64 laptop shown by Arima at Computex. The A520 is not a widescreen model and the dimensions do not match the Emachines laptop at all.
It may be an Arima W730-K8 DTR, but...
I expect that they are made by one of the Taiwan-based ODMs. 70% of laptops worldwide are made by these companies. However, I don't know which one. I have never researched Emachines to find out who makes their laptops. If I get the time, I will see what I can find.
From what I have been able to piece together from public sources of information, ThinkPads are made in IBM controlled factories in China and Mexico. They are also made by Wistron (largely in the Philippines) and by the LG-IBM joint venture in Korea.
Edit: Someone who had experience with a...
If you want to see what widescreen gaming looks like without stretching, bars, etc. see this thread. The review is of a Sager 4760 but the comments and screen shots apply to any widescreen notebook.
I have found that the OEM manufacturer is a very good indicator of notebook quality. For example, I agree with you that the Dell Inspiron 600M that you mention in a previous post is a well made notebook. I don't think it's merely a coincidence, though, that Wistron makes Dell's small...
The greater the screen resolution, the more pixels there are on the screen and the greater the amount of video RAM that is required for optimum performance. In my opinion, 64MB of video RAM is marginal for a WSXGA+ screen but is fine for a WXGA screen.
Also, notebook screens look best when...
Both the Dell 8600 and the Compaq X1000 are made by the same Taiwan-based manufacturer: Compal. The Gateway M505 is made by Wistron who also makes X- and R-series ThinkPads for IBM.
The Gateway M505 gets 4-1/2 hours plus of battery life. If you read the review thread I linked to, you can see for yourself. Also, the ATI 9600 equipped Gateway M505 is 2-3 times faster in gaming performance than the X1000 with ATI 9000. You can play DirectX version 9 games on the M505 at...
There is a fan site for the x1000 at www.x1000forums.com. I don't recommend the Dell 8600 due to quality issues, heat and consumer technical support that has been subcontracted to the lowest bidder in India.
If you are interested in a laptop that has better build quality and technical...
I know of some Apple powerbook users who have gone with the Gateway M505XL. They like the fact that the M505XL uses the same slot-loading Superdrive as the high end Apple Powerbooks. Build quality and price are also very good. For reviews and comments on the Gateway M505, see here.
Your Gateway 400SD notebook is noisy because it is equipped with a desktop CPU. A desktop CPU runs hot so it requires fans running to cool it. I expect that your battery life is short as well for the same reason. I don't know any good way to make such a notebook quieter. You could try...
If you are looking for a laptop with good gaming performance and good battery life at a low price, I recommend the Gateway M505X. It is made for Gateway by Wistron who also makes the X- and R-series ThinkPads for IBM. It is a well built Centrino laptop with ATI 9600 graphics. Both Office...
