If silence is what you're truly after, your first priority should be looking for a new computer case.
Coolermaster HAF series cases are built for maximum cooling, so along with excellent intake/exhaust airflow, any sounds emanating from your PC are just as easily escaping.
Once you have a...

Ahh. Too bad. XFX cheapened them up getting rid of the digital Volterra VRMs (no software voltage control) and using a cheaper (noisier? poorer performing?) heatsink/fan setup.
Sure it's nice that the VRMs on these newer models (probably) run a bit cooler, but I personally wouldn't be happy...
If comfort is key, the SS QcK series is excellent. It comes in numerous sizes and thicknesses.
After using a QcK mini I'll never go back to hard plastic or glass mousepads/mats.
It does get dirty, but is easy to clean with a slightly damp sponge.
Reasonably priced too...
If you want to get rid of the squeal while surfing the web, just underclock your video card during 2D IDLE desktop usage.
With my MSI HD4890 @ stock PowerPlay control (bouncing from 240/999 to 880/999 randomly), I would hear the little squeals whenever I scrolled through pages in IE...

Crossfire works fine without CCC.
Any settings you would usually manipulate with CCC are still in the registry, it's just that without CCC you'd have to manually adjust them yourself, or use Ati Tray Tools to change them...
Don't worry about it.
My Sapphire HD4870 (reference 3+2 digital VRMs) squealed, and the Sapphire HD4890 (reference 5+2 digital VRMs) I just replaced it with squeals. Both during very high framerates (+150FPS). It doesn't impact the card at all, only your ears.
This is highly common and...
His "before" results are way off. The "after" results are more like what you usually would see.
Here are my results going from FW1275 to FW1.10 (1370), with a single Vertex 30GB, aligned to a 128KB offset.
Not much difference, performance-wise. If you're running FW1275 without...
That's the reference PCB design, with the reference blower cooler.
You could give the AC Twin Turbo a shot, but you would have to use the stock red cooling plate as shown above in Digital Viper-X's link.
VRM temperatures will be extremely high without it, just using the AC Twin Turbo as...
What HD4870 do you have? Links, pictures?
If it's a non-reference PCB design, with a non-reference cooler, then the AC Twin Turbo would be a good bet to lower your operating noise levels.
If it's a reference PCB design, with the reference blower cooler, then the AC Twin Turbo will be...
Of course it will usually be more stable, physically, mounted by two slots.
But the weight of the waterblock is most assuredly going to be less than the stock cooler, so mounting with just one slot should be fine.
If not, you can always use twist-ties or some other material to pull up the...
Sapphire's HD4870 versions
Sapphire 100243L (512MB) and 100243-1GL (1GB)
Reference PCB design; 3+2 phase digital VRMs
Reference dual-slot exhausting blower-fan heatpipe-based cooler
Cooler exhausts all air outside of the case
Stock clocks 750/900
VRM temperature monitoring

If you can wait a week or two, I'd recommend doing so. It's been announced that ATI will be dropping the price of the HD4870 512MB by $50.
The card you're looking at, and/or others, could be even lower with or without rebates.
As far as the choice you're currently considering, it looks to...
They all use the same Qimonda or Hynix memory rated at 1000MHz (4000MHz QP'ed).
Each manufacturer just bins them so that the better performing memory goes on their factory OC'ed cards.
You won't see a huge performance increase from models with OC'ed memory. If you're lazy and don't want to...
To the OP: Just as I figured, your current BIOS is incorrectly set. Clock info #03 is conflicting with what is set in Clock info #09. They should be the same, and set to 750/[email protected]. Also, your UVD settings (Clock info #'s 04-06) are set incorrectly (underclocked/volted). If you do any...
I'd bet your BIOS is set incorrectly. This is a common problem with recent HD4870's.
1. Download and run Gpu-Z. It's a single file, no installation needed.
2. Next to the BIOS Version string there is a little icon with a green arrow, click on it, and select "Save to file...". It should ask...
Downloading ATT from the link you posted above will always supply you with the latest beta version. It's usually updated quite frequently, so it helps to check every couple of weeks or so.
If you're using only ATT and not CCC, it's recommended to download and install the Catalyst "Driver...
For adjusting control panel settings you have two choices: CCC or Ati Tray Tools.
If you use CCC for control panel settings only, then you can use ATT or Rivatuner for OC'ing/fan speeds.
If you want to avoid CCC and .net Framework, ATT is a great all-in-one solution.
There really isn't...
There aren't any programs from ATI card manufacturers, specifically like EVGA Precision.
There are third-party programs, namely Rivatuner and Ati Tray Tools, that are both great programs for controlling fan speeds and/or GPU/MEM clocks for your XFX HD4850.
Whether or not your card is quiet...
The MEMIO reading is actually just a specific section of the GPU core. There is no monitoring of the actual memory chip temperatures, for the HD4870.
If your MEMIO temps are that high, I'd say your VRM temps are even higher, and may be overheating. I'd say this is likely what is causing your...
I'm also using a Sapphire HD4870 512MB and a HP LP2065. Excellent card for the resolution you're running at. Your power supply should be more than enough for the HD4870. You will be very happy with the upgrade...
Zanthia is referring to Atitool, which is an older program used mainly for artifact testing. Other than that it's useless for the HD4850.
Others in the thread are referring to a program called Ati Tray Tools, which is useful as a replacement for CCC. It includes features such as GPU/MEM...
Your BIOS indicates that the card runs at 625/[email protected] all the time; 2D/UVD/3D.
Pretty piss poor, considering the extra price you pay for an Xfx card. You'd expect they could figure out how to properly set the card to underclock GPU/MEM speeds and undervolt in 2D for power savings and heat...
I have the same noise with my HD4870.
It's been buzzing since I purchased it last July. Card has been and still works perfectly.
The buzzing noise is dependant on the framerate of whatever game/benchmark I'm running.
200+ FPS = very high pitched buzzing; <100 FPS = lower pitched buzzing...
