I just downloaded it. Fan is very quiet (still a lot quieter than other notebooks I've used) even though it runs constantly. The system is also cooler to the touch. Yay!!

Memory is cheap. Order your macbook with 512 and then order 2GB from newegg.com (less than $200) and OSX will fly. As for windows XP, it shouldn't be too surprising that a 5-year-old operating system runs pretty well with 512MB memory.

Are people getting "integrated graphics" and "shared memory" confused? The first mac mini had integrated graphics... as do all apple notebooks and iMacs. Only the powermacs do not have integrated graphics, they have separate AGP or PCI-e graphics boards.

2GB support is nice. However, the shared VRAM is definitely a step backwards... one of their big selling points of the G4 mini was the fact that it had dedicated video memory. So, that reduces the amount of memory available to the OS.

Doubtful, since it's the same form factor. I hope they still use standard PC3200 DIMM's, so I can move my 1GB module into the new mini and sell my old one with the 512 it came with.

From what I've heard, intel's next-gen architecture (64-bit consumer multi-core chips) won't be until the second half of 2006... those will probably be the chips on the new PowerMac's or whatever they're called. Tiger isn't fully 64-bit though, it's still mostly 32-bit with some 64-bit...

The G4 actually has a faster vector engine than the G5 (clock for clock). The thing that sucks about the G4 is the slow front side bus. The G4 is plenty fast but it spends most of its time waiting for data to come across the bus.

Don't forget that as far as marketing people know, "dual core" is exactly twice as fast as single core, when in reality it vastly depends on the application (and even then it's more like 70% faster due to synchronization overhead). Still, multicore notebooks are the way of the future. Soon...
