Is it just me, or does anyone else see that AGEIA's PPU is just gunna fail?

GPUs weren't around since the beginning of computing. They became necessary, as you pointed out (with your voodoo example) as games got more complicated and the CPUs started becoming unable to keep up with rendering. Well, is it not likely that as gamers demand more immersion and more realism...

    XP - Sluggish Explorer behavior

I've got a friend who's having issues with XP being sluggish. All her programs run fine, but only after having been opened once. In other words, the first instance of any program she runs is being very sluggish. Simple Explorer tasks like moving a file take much longer than usual, running a...

    where to start with Perl

Thanks for the replies, guys. I found a nice website (perlmonks.org) that seems to have a lot of info. I will check out the llama book, although so far the camel book (Programming Perl) hasn't been too terribly helpful. I'll definately check out "Perl for System Administration," that sounds...

    where to start with Perl

I need to pick up Perl quickly for a new job. Basically i need to be able to use it to query network information about different machines/servers on a network, then play with the data some. Does anyone know a good book (or online tutorial) for this? I'm mainly interested in the network/server...

    tungsten e gps

Doesn't make sense to me that its a power issue when you can get a powered GPS receiver. All i'm missing is the software to work with it. I've actually found a whole kit for the tungsten e, too, but it doesn't have map packs for the U.S. I guess at this point my only options are either a...

    tungsten e gps

This kind of thing is what makes me wish i had done a little bit more research before i bought it. I'd really like to have some kind of navi set up with it though, does anybody know any software that will work? Seems like the hardware issue is solved, that GPS unit on eBay seems to be powered...

    tungsten e gps

does anyone know of a GPS system that'll work with a tungsten e, and has U.S maps? I found one by Kirrio, but it seems to only have EU and UK maps. Useless for someone in SoCal. I found a GPS receiver on eBay that's compatible with...

    PVR and mpeg4 encoding

Hey, Are there any good PVR's that output mpeg4? I want to use mpeg4 to save space, but if its possible, i'd like to avoid having to record in mpeg2 and then convert to mpeg4. Can the Hauppage PVR500 encode directly to mpeg4? If not, what's a good card that can do so? thanks

read-only access to Desktop and My Documents

Update: I tried the gpedit method, and while it seems to work pretty well, its kind of easy to get around. users can still save stuff from internet explorer to the desktop or rightclick to create new files there, and the Administrator account is affected as well. Also, using command line...

read-only access to Desktop and My Documents

Is it possible to modify a user's account so that they can't write anything to the desktop or the My Documents folder and its subfolders? We want to have the users at my company write all their documents to a network drive, and lock access to the local machines. I've tried making the folders...

    Circuit simulation programs and linux

For my classes we use ePD over a vnc server on our Unix servers, or on Unix boxes. Be thankful you don't have to use ePD, its the crappiest, least stable, quirkiest circuit building/simulation tool out there.

    wire sleeving

Cool beans. This is an old Enermax 350 power supply, from before the days of dual LED fans and triple digit price tags. I bought it for my first custom PC like... 4 years ago? Still works like a charm and delivers more than enough juice.

Just make sure to have a really powerful hair dryer if you don't have a heat gun. A heat gun will shrink the wrap a lot faster than a hair dryer.

wow, thats a nice tool kit. Should make your life a lot easier.Heatshrink will work better than electrical tape. If you want you can ziptie the ends and then heatshrink or tape over them.

    wire sleeving

Its pretty easy to do, but do yourself a favor and get the male/female molex connector and the ATX pin removal tool(if you're doing either the main power cable or the 4pin P4 connector). That will save you hours of grief and sore fingers, trust me on that. The sleeving itself is no that hard to...

    Bondo and plastic

check out the "bondo bucket" thread in the worklogs section. Bondo will adhere to the plastic of a case bezel, but take from pretty heavy grit sandpaper to it first. It flakes off pretty easily from the plastic unless its scratched up really good. Its not much of an issue in my project but it...

Cut a couple holes for fans, install LED fans. That will give you a nice, even glow and improve your case's ventilation, too.

Noob Mod: WW2 (lots o Pics)

I got one of those attachments at Pep Boys and I love it. Much easier to use. Doesn't really change the coating characteristics of the spray can too much, but it makes it much easier to get a decent paint job because of the way you hold it.

    Bondo Bucket

Well, I guess my next case will have to be a wood case so I can make use of my new Dremel attachment. I'm really not looking forward to using the cutting disks... maybe I'll get a 4.5in holesaw. Is it me or are those things outrageously priced? I mean, a couple bucks more can get a decent...

Awesome, thanks. What speed did you use to cut? Also, great news. One of my cousins got me a gift certificate at Newegg, which gave me the perfect excuse to pick up a new motherboard. Since I'm going for sleek, I chose something black, the MSI 865PE Neo2-PFS (Platinum Edition), $76 at Newegg...

    Bondo Bucket

It weighs a hell of a lot more than it used to, i'll tell you that much. When i did it the other way (wasting time, money, and bondo) it weighed at least a pound or two. Now its slightly less because i used the mesh skeleton. Hopefully i'll get the front done tomorrow and i can start cutting out...

    Bondo Bucket

I think it would fit. However, I'd have to do some modifications to the back of the case that i'm not really up for. I'm pretty sure that the back panel and agp/pci slots will line up just right as it is if i put the motherboard up at the top. Besides cabling will be less of a nightmare that...

The SFF is too loud in the current case, so i want to go back to a regular, full-size system which will run cooler and be quieter. I dont have a full ATX mobo that supports dual channel ram, so i'm just gonna use the mobo in my Shuttle. Odd, i know. :p

http://www-scf.usc.edu/~agevorki/worklog.htm This is my time-killer for winter break. How small can my WinXP partition be?

Save yourself the headache and just have one partition, or if you want a partition just for windows make it like 6 gigs or so. Why so big? Today i was downloading the isos for Mandrake 10. I had windows on its own partition, 5 gigs in size. I ran out of disk space on it trying to download more...

which upgrade - pata to sata or 512 to 1gig ram?

Which of the two would affect map load times in games? I'd think the hard drive would. The thing is, I've never seen a situation on my computer that would warrant more memory. Besides, this is a 2mb cache drive. I though the SATA was significantly faster, and with an 8mb cache i thought the...

bare minimum pc specs for htpc function?

i've got a nice little p3 machine i'd like to adapt for use as a htpc. It's a 650mhz p3 with 256mb sdram on a generic motherboard. With a nice PCI AIW card, say like an ati 7500, will this machine have enough power to run a htpc setup? thanks
